Angie: Goodnight, EJ.
EJ: I just got home and I can’t sleep. I feel like I did the Christmas my dad got me the bike I had begged him for all year.
Angie: You say the sweetest things.
EJ: All true.
I smile, snuggling under my covers and staring at our message thread.
Yesterday I was still on the fence about saying yes to EJ. I kept telling myself I should say no, even though I really wanted to go out with him.

EJ: I just wanted to check in on you.
Angie: Thank you.
EJ: Always.
I smile, despite the fact thatalwaysis more than I can allow myself at this point in time.
Angie: I’d better get some sleep. Jack and Levi don’t know what sleeping in means.
EJ: I don’t either.
I laugh softly.
Angie: Goodnight, EJ.
EJ: Goodnight, Angie.

I do another pull-up, lifting my torso so my chest hits the bar. My body might be going through the motions in the fire station workout room, but my mind is elsewhere.
It’s been four days since I took Angie out for dinner.
Four days since she said I could take her out again.

But now? Radio silence. And I know better than to push her. I just have to wait.
Weber and Truck are doing a sit-up competition on the mats, switching to jackknives.
“So, you took Angie to Grant’s?” Truck asks me.
