And that’s when I heard the door open and close, and heavy feet coming down the hallway.

No way he could have slept with her that quickly.

Well, if he was like my college boyfriend, Carter, it would’ve been possible.

I chuckled internally at the thought, because I knew Cutler wasn’t that guy.

I kept my eyes closed, pretending to be asleep when I heard his feet stop moving outside my door.

“You awake, Jeege?” he whispered as his footsteps came closer, and I could feel him bend down beside my bed. “Did I wake you?”

I chuckled and opened my eyes. “No, but it’s not for lack of effort.”

He smelled like whiskey, and he had a goofy smile on his face highlighted by the little bit of light from the moon coming through the sliver in the blinds on the window.

“I wanted to leave when you left.” I could tell that he was drunk by the way his words slurred.

“We were fine. Did you have fun with Sydney?” I asked, feeling my throat tighten as the words left my mouth, because I wasn’t sure I could handle his response right now.

It made no sense that I was feeling this way, but we’d entered a gray area, and I was trying to work through it without making things weird.

“No. I told you I don’t want anyone else. And fuck, I tried. I tried to get into it. I’m just going through something,” he said, and I could hear the struggle in his voice.

I sprang forward, putting my hand on his cheek. “Hey. It’s okay, Bear. You don’t have to try to do anything. I’m not forcing myself to like anyone right now either.”

“I missed you when you left.”

“I missed you too. But we only left about forty minutes ago,” I chuckled.

“I meant when you were in Paris. And I guess I meant tonight too. I like you being here, Jeege.” He shifted where he was squatting beside the bed and fell down on his ass, laughing in the process.

“You’re drunk. Let me get you to bed.” I sat up and tossed my legs over the side.

“Can I sleep in here with you? I don’t want to be alone tonight.” He had this lazy smile on his face that was so sexy I had to squeeze my thighs together in response.

“Of course you can. It’s not like we haven’t slept in the same bed hundreds of times. You just shared a bed with me in Paris.” I leaned down and pulled off his boots, one at a time, before extending my hand to him and pulling him to his feet. He walked around the bed, and I lifted the covers and he climbed in. He was fully clothed.

This wasn’t weird at all.

We were best friends.

So why did it suddenly feel so hot in here?

I moved to the other side of the bed and climbed in, rolling on my side to face him.

“I never want to lose you, Jeege,” he said in a slurred whisper.

“You never will.”

“I hated being so far away from you.” His hand moved to my hip.

“I’m right here.” I scooched closer, loving the feel of his big, warm body against mine.

“Do you know what I like to fall asleep dreaming about?” he asked.

“Tell me.”

But the sound of his breaths told me he wasn’t going to finish that thought.
