Leo

Leo stood near the back of the crowded audience, his heart swelling as Olivia and her bakery staff stepped onto the brightly lit stage.

She looked nervous, but absolutely radiant. She was stronger. She was kinder to herself. She was infinitely more alive because she had actively fought to return to the things she loved.

Now, she was standing onstage with her cake. And he was there to watch the entire world see what he had always known.

The three celebrity judges stood near the center of the stage, reviewing their notes before they began presenting the finalists and discussing each cake.

When they finally reached Olivia’s creation, the lead judge stepped forward to a microphone.

"This cake,Sweet Lies, truly stood out to the panel," the judge began, gesturing to the three-tiered masterpiece. "Because it is not merely a beautiful dessert. It carries a profound story."

The judge looked down at the notes Olivia had provided with her submission. "This piece captures the essence of two friends whose lives were shaped to the core by waiting, fear, unwavering allegiance, words left unsaid, and an affection that took on a whole new meaning as time went on."

Leo felt a sudden, sharp tightness in his chest.

"The ivory tiers represent the sweetness of what was always real," the judge continued smoothly. "The intentional cracks across the bottom tier represent what had to break before the truth could finally show itself. The dark ivy represents aquiet devotion that kept growing, even in the places no one paid attention to. The dark roses represent longing, grief, and passion. The bright yellow macaron represents joy returning in a place where no one expected it to bloom. And the pocket watch represents time. The years lost, the years survived, and the exact moment love finally arrived honestly."

The judge paused, letting the emotional weight of the design settle over the quiet room, before shifting to the tasting notes.

"And the flavor is absolutely extraordinary," the judge praised. "A layered vanilla bean, honey, and almond cake. An apricot filling inspired by traditional North Carolina sonker, paired with a delicate, masterful note of lemon thyme. A silky, perfectly balanced frosting that is not too sweet, and a bright fruit element that keeps the cake from feeling too rich."

The judge looked directly at Olivia. "The cake is calledSweet Lies, but the story behind it is clearly not about deception winning. It is about the sweet, small stories people tell themselves to survive, until they are finally brave enough for the truth. It is a stunning achievement."

Leo felt a sudden rush of emotion rise in his throat The judge hadn't named him directly, but Leo knew. Everyone who loved Olivia and knew their story knew.

On the stage, Olivia glanced past the bright lights, searching the audience.

Their eyes met. The moment hit Leo so hard he forgot how to breathe.

"And the winner of this year's regional invitational..." the lead judge announced, opening a gold envelope. "Is Olivia Thorne fromSweet Briar!"

For half a second, Olivia did not move.

Then, her team erupted.

Maria screamed at the top of her lungs. Sam jumped in the air, pulling Chloe and Elena into a jumping hug. Olivia covered her mouth with both hands, completely stunned, tears spilling over her eyelashes. Her staff rushed her, pulling her into a chaotic, weeping, joyful celebration right there on the stage.

Leo watched her receive the heavy glass award. The applause died down as Olivia stepped to the microphone.

She wiped a tear from her cheek, holding the award tightly. She thanked her team first, her voice thick with emotion. She thanked Maria, Sam, Chloe, and Elena for keeping the bakery alive when she couldn't breathe. She thanked her parents. She thanked Hannah, Sophie, Brooklyn and Claire. She thanked the judges for understanding her work.

Then, she looked directly at the back of the room, finding Leo’s icy blue eyes,

"And thank you," Olivia said softly, her voice echoing through the speakers, "to the person who reminded me that sweetness does not have to be simple to be incredibly real."

Leo felt the words settle deep in his soul.

After the final photos were taken and the stage began to clear, Olivia didn't wait for her team. She handed the heavy glass award to Maria, picked up the skirt of her dress, and ran down the stage stairs.

She went straight to Leo.

She threw herself into his arms.
