He came to a standstill on the dock for a second and leaned down, nuzzling his face into the crook of my neck.

“I’m falling for you, Hope.”

A thrill went through me, stealing my breath for a moment.

Whoa.I was never going to get used to that.

“Me too,” I whispered

CHAPTER 49

“Careful, it’s really hot,” Jay said, setting down a crystal mug filled with warm brown liquid and a generous pile of whipped cream.

“Thank you,” I said, sitting on the counter still wrapped in a towel, shivering a little.

I held the mug in my hands and as I sipped the warm liquid, I started to feel slightly better.

“We need to get you out of those clothes, too,” he said, coming over to me, not even hesitating before stepping into the space between my legs and resting his hands on my hips.

It still didn’t feel fully real that we’d just made out in the lake. And had I really just admitted I was falling in love with him?

“I’m so cold I don’t think I can even move,” I said and he smiled.

“Is this an invitation?” His eyes sparkled with flirtatious teasing.

“No,” I groaned, rolling my eyes, though a smiletugged at my lips. “I’m just wondering if you could go upstairs and maybe grab me some?” I gave him my best doe-eyed look, and it made him chuckle.

“I’ll be right back.”

Jay stepped away from me and disappeared down the hallway. He returned a few minutes later wearing a fresh pair of black sweats and holding a stack of clothes for me.

But they weren’t mine. They were his.

“I have clothes, Jay.”

“I know. But I’d rather you wear mine.”

I rolled my eyes and took the stack. “You’re—” I trailed off when I saw more amusement sparkling in his eyes.

“Insufferable. I know.”

“I’ll be right back.”

I slipped into the bathroom next to the kitchen and hurried to change out of my wet clothes. It helped instantly.

When I came out again, Jay was no longer in the kitchen but sitting on the couch.

I set the pile of wet clothes near the door leading up to my apartment, then went to sit beside him. I chose a spot a few cushions away and pulled my knees up to my chest, snagging a blanket to wrap around myself.

He’d started a fire, and the warmth was slowly thawing me.

“Better?” he asked.

I nodded, biting my lip.

“Jay—”

“Yes?”
