He nodded. “Go. You can relay the information to JJ as you get it.”

“What are you gonna do?” JJ asked him.

“I’m gonna go talk to Sheriff Endsley. See if he knows anything.”

“If Round Rock PD arrested him, does that mean the crime happened in their city limits?” Slade asked.

Everyone looked at Evan.

“Yes. Which means they’d have jurisdiction.” He held up a hand before anyone else could ask another question. “But right now, we don’t have any facts aside from them having enough evidence to convince a judge to give them a warrant. Let me talk to them. I’ll let you know what I find out.”

“Come sit down,” Holly told JJ, guiding her toward a chair.

“I’m fine.”

“Sit,” Luca insisted. “While they do that, let’s see what we can find out on our end.”

“Keep it on the DL,” Brantley told him, meaning he didn’t want them leaving any cyber footprints.

“Always, boss.”

“Baz wants you to call his father,” Brantley told JJ.

She nodded, a bewildered look in her eyes. Brantley understood that look. It was the same one Baz had when Brantley showed up after her disappearance. A mixture of worry and terror. He understood the reaction, but this was just the beginning.

“Trust me, JJ,” he told her.

JJ nodded.

Brantley looked at Slade. “Do not leave her side. And keep Tesha with you.”

“Got it.”

“Come on, Reese. Let’s go see what we can find out.”

Fifteen minutes later, Brantley was walking into the sheriff’s department. Being that it was in a small town, it wasn’t much. The building was small, with enough space to have an office for the sheriff, another for his assistant, plus several desks and three jail cells. Except for the two offices, everything was in the main room. In one corner was a door to the break room and two more for the bathrooms.

One of the deputies looked up, but before he could greet him, Brantley turned the corner and headed for Sheriff Endsley’s office.

He stopped at the door when he heard the sheriff on the phone. Whatever the call was about didn’t sound urgent, but Brantley didn’t interrupt. He wanted to because nothing could possibly be more important than finding out why no one had been told that Sonny and Molly were dead. However, he figured the fastest way to piss off the sheriff was to fire at him with all barrels before even saying hello.

Finally, Sheriff Endsley ended the call and looked up. His forehead creased.

“Hey, Brantley.” He looked at Reese, then back. “What brings you down here?”

Brantley decided to skip the hello and get right to the point. “Round Rock PD just arrested Baz at our place.”

“Arrested? For what?”

Brantley walked into the room, allowing Reese to join them. “They claim the murder of Molly Ryan and Sonny Gilmore. Have you heard anything about it?”

Jeff sighed and gestured toward the guest chairs. “No. But that’s not surprisin’.”

Brantley didn’t want to sit, so he remained near the door, waiting for an explanation.

“I’ve got a BOLO out on both of them. At the least, they should’ve given me a heads-up.” Jeff glanced between them. “I take it they found the bodies in Round Rock? Did they say where?”

“They didn’t sayanything. They showed up—six of them—with an arrest warrant.”
