“But … how? When?”
Dr. Tinder laughed, his gaze shooting to her. “I take it you don’t need me to explain the process.”
“No. But…” JJ stared at the screen. “I’m thirty-one weeks. Why didn’t we know about a second baby before now?”
Maybe this doctor wasn’t as good as people claimed he was. How could he have missed that there were two babies? And how did this happen? Twins didn’t run in her family. She looked up at Baz, narrowing her gaze, trying to recall any reference to twins in his family. She didn’t recall his mother or father ever mentioning any.
Dr. Tinder worked the machine as he had the last two times she’d done this, snapping photos and taking measurements. He took his time, moving the wand all around her belly. JJ couldn’t tell what he saw on the screen most of the time. Now and then, she’d catch the perfect image of a face or fingers, but other than that, she couldn’t tell there were two babies.
“My guess is their heartbeats were synched, so I didn’t detect it.” He pointed toward the fetal doppler. “That’s what tipped me off this time. I heard two distinct heartbeats. In different locations. And we missed it on a sonogram because he’s hiding behind her.”
“Are they okay?” Baz asked, his voice full of awe.
“They look good. It’s a little crowded in there now, but everything looks in order.” Dr. Tinder passed her the cloth to wipe her belly. “Iwillwant to see you every week from here on out. And keep in mind, there’s a good chance you’ll go into labor earlier than we thought. Closer to thirty-seven weeks than forty. Doesn’t mean you won’t carry them to term, though. I do want you to take it easy. No strenuous activities.”
“You mean you don’t want me to get kidnapped again?”
His expression sobered.
“Too soon?” she teased, although she had to swallow past the lump in her throat.
“No strenuous activities,” he repeated.
“Is sex still okay?” she asked because she liked to see Baz blush.
“As long as it’s not uncomfortable.”
“Two babies,” JJ muttered, her eyes sliding up to Baz. “We need another bedroom.”
He laughed, and it was then she realized he was crying.
His tears spurred a few of her own, but they were happy tears.
Two babies.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Slade was sitting at his desk whenJJ and Baz walked in.
“Where’s Brantley?” JJ asked, not waiting for anyone to answer as she headed for the stairs.
“I’ll carry that up,” Baz said, grabbing her bag. “You stay down here for now.”
“Is somethin’ wrong?” Reese asked, coming out of the conference room where he’d been for the past hour.
“Nope.” She grinned. “But can you get him? Pretty please.”
Reese pulled out his phone, tapping something on the screen.
Slade continued to watch JJ and Baz, trying to determine what was going on. They both seemed happier than they had last week.
“How’d it go at the doctor?” Becs asked, coming out of the kitchen with a cup of coffee.
“We got some interesting news,” JJ said, and it was possible she was going to burst at the seams, her excitement was palpable.
“He’s on his way,” Reese announced.
Slade’s phone buzzed on his desk. While everyone was preoccupied with getting Brantley over there, he picked it up and read the text.
