“Molly, are you in danger?”
“No.”
More mumbling in the background.
“I mean, yes. Yes, I’m in danger. I need you, Sebastian.”
“Where are you?”
Again, she ignored the question.
“Tell me where you are so I can come get you.”
“You will?”
He wasn’t sure whether to be angry or sad that she would believe such a lie. Molly Ryan needed some serious help; there was no disputing that. JJ was right. She was delusional.
“Is Sonny okay?”
“What?”
“Sonny,” he repeated. “Is he okay? The police said he was dead, too.”
“Oh.”
JJ’s bedside lamp came on.
She came around to his side of the bed and showed him her phone screen. It was recording. She set it down in front of him, then raced to the bathroom.
“Is he dead, Molly?”
This time, even her voice was muffled, as though she was covering the phone. He could tell she was arguing with someone. He assumed it was Sonny, and this was phase two of whatever nut job plan they had. What that plan was, he had no idea. Based on the crime scene photos that Luca had hacked into, Molly and Sonny hadn’t thought much about what they were trying to do. And no matter which way he spun it, he couldn’t figure it out. The only logical conclusion was that they wanted it to look like they were dead. Maybe so they could disappear indefinitely. But framing Baz and letting him take the fall seemed to be the opposite of what Molly had wanted when she’d kidnapped JJ.
Then again, maybe she’d gotten some clarity and realized Baz wanted nothing to do with her, and having him arrested for her murder was poetic justice. Not that he believed Molly was capable of coming up with an elaborate plot to punish him. She was nice—and yes, mentally ill—but she wasn’t all that smart.
JJ appeared again, her eyes reflecting her concern.
“If you’re in danger, Molly, I can come get you.”
JJ nodded, then rolled her hand, urging him to continue.
“Let me come get you, Molly. Let me save you.”
“You will? You’ll save me, Sebastian?”
“Of course I will,” he lied, hating the foul taste the words left in his mouth. After what this crazy bitch did to JJ, he would rather let her rot.
“I knew you loved me, Sebastian.”
He wasn’t touching that. He could only feed this nonsense to a degree.
“I’m ready to come home, Sebastian.”
Before he could ask her again for her location, she continued.
“I’m ready to move into our house. Sebastian Junior needs us both. Only eight more weeks until he’s born. Then we can be together.”
JJ rolled her hand urgently.
