He got up and approached the bed, taking her hand and gently squeezing it.

“I’m not dreamin’?”

“No, baby. You’re not.”

Tears pooled on her lashes, but she held them at bay.

She waited until the nurse left the room before she said, “Are you out on bail?”

He shook his head. “They didn’t arrest me.”

Now she was confused. They’d come there with guns and a crew big enough to take down Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson if he put up a fight, but they didn’t arrest him?

She frowned. “But they had a warrant.”

“They were hopin’ to scare me into confessing to somethin’ I didn’t do.”

JJ stared at him. “You couldn’t do something like that.”

His gaze shifted down briefly. “When it comes to protecting you, JJ, I can do worse.” He met her gaze again. “But I didn’t hurt Sonny or Molly.”

She believed him. She honestly did, but still, JJ had questions. One specific question.

“Where were you on Thursday?”

Baz frowned.

“You told Reese you were goin’ to the mental hospital with Evan. Evan mentioned it earlier. Said Reese asked about it.”

Something passed in his teal blue eyes, but it flickered only briefly before he said, “I had something to take care of.”

“What?”

“It’s not important right now.”

“Baz…”

“JJ…” he echoed her tone.

“Why won’t you tell me?”

“Because it’s not the time or the place for that conversation.”

“What conversation?”

His left eyebrow slowly lifted, but he didn’t respond. It was the look he gave her when he wanted her to drop something. But he knew her better than that. She didn’t drop things. Not willingly. And certainly not when they were this important.

“Just tell me so I’ll stop worryin’.”

“Not this time,” he said with enough insistence she questioned whether to push him.

JJ opened her mouth to ask again, but he cut her off.

“Drop it, JJ. Now.”

“Fine,” she pouted, turning to look at the wall and not him. “But this isn’t over, Detective. Not by a long shot.”

It didn’t surprise her that he laughed at her petulance.
