Brantley wasn’t wrong. Decker had worked for the task force for such a short time, and he never engaged much while he’d been there. Reese never saw him in town, wasn’t even sure where he’d been staying.
“I’m gonna have JJ dig into his personal life. Maybe this isn’t about the Kavanaghs at all.”
“Yeah,” Reese said. “That’s probably a good idea.”
At this point, it was all they could really do.

Baz’s footsteps on the stairs preceded hisvoice, alerting JJ to his presence before he appeared.
“You about ready to head home?”
She looked up from her computer screen, then to the clock on her desk, and finally over to Baz. “Yeah. I didn’t realize it was almost five.”
“You’ve been focused.”
She had been. Ever since she got the text from Brantley asking her to dig into Decker’s personal life, she’d been running searches to find every bit of information she could find. She was used to coming up empty when she did that but what she’d uncovered about Decker Bromwell had created far more questions than answers.
“You wanna swing by the diner for dinner?” Baz offered as she logged out of her computer and undocked her laptop. “It’s Monday. I think it’s clam chowder night.”
The mention of her favorite soup caused her stomach to churn. It was crazy what pregnancy did to an appetite. She couldn’t remember ever being repulsed by anything, but it was a frequent occurrence these days.
JJ shook her head. “Nope. No.”
“Okay then. I can make somethin’ at the house. We’ve got some chicken breasts. I could make stir-fry. Or—”
“Salad. I want a salad.”
Baz took her laptop bag. “Salad it is.”
“With sunflower seeds.”
“Hmm. I’m not sure we have those.”
“And mandarin oranges.”
“I know for a fact we don’t have those.”
JJ headed down the stairs. “And a hard-boiled egg. And some of that chicken you mentioned. Actually, no. I want a Cobb salad.” She heard him chuckle. “With tomatoes and avocados and chicken and bacon.”
“They have that at the diner,” he said as he flipped off the lights.
JJ stepped outside. “I told you the diner sounded fine.”
This time, his laughter was more robust, and it put a smile on her face.
Their conversation lulled until they were in the truck.
While Baz stored her bag in the backseat, JJ got in and put on her seat belt. “I heard you on the phone earlier. Were you talkin’ to Charlie?”
“Yeah.”
“How’re they doin’?”
“Good. They’ve talked to almost every person in the neighborhood where the attempted abduction was.”
“They get anything that’ll lead the cops to an arrest?”
