“We should head back to the office,” RT stated. “Regroup. Once JJ pinpoints where they’re at, we’ll proceed from there.”

“Any chance I could catch a ride with y’all?” Atticus asked when they were closing up the cabin, securing it behind them.

Reese didn’t bother to answer as he headed for the motorcycles they’d left back near the dirt road. If Baz wanted to let the guy hitch a ride, that was his business. Right now, Reese wanted to find his mother, and standing around with his thumb up his ass wasn’t moving things along.

“You good?”

He turned to see Brantley strolling toward him. “As can be expected, yeah.”

“You did good in there.”

Reese studied Brantley’s eyes, looking for a hint of what he was referring to.

“You didn’t kill the guy,” Brantley tacked on with a smile. “If my mom was missin’…” Brantley shrugged as though to say he wasn’t sure he would’ve done the same thing.

Reese grabbed the helmet from its perch on the seat of the bike.

“Let’s head back to Sniper 1,” Brantley said. “We’ll grab the truck and figure out where to go from there.”

Reese nodded.

“Oh, and I asked JJ to call Hugh. Give him a heads-up.”

“He’s gonna freak.”

“I told her to keep it high-level,” Brantley added. “I figure Cindy can fill him in on her antics.”

Great. Now Hugh was going to know that Cindy was complicit in a crime. Regardless of her reasons, she had hit a man over the head with a bat. Plus, she was in a stolen vehicle with a man who was on the run from the law. And God only knows who else.

If this was the universe’s way of ensuring his life didn’t get too routine, it was doing a damn good job.

Chapter Twenty-Six

“Tell me you found them,” Brantley saidwhen he encountered JJ in the bullpen at the Sniper 1 Security office.

They’d returned from the cabin a few minutes ago, and he was ready to be on the move again. He knew Reese felt the same because the man was practically vibrating with nervous energy. He was worried about his mother, which was understandable, but Brantley worried his anxiety was going to escalate if they didn’t get a bead on Cindy’s location soon.

JJ turned in her chair and peered up at him, her expression solemn. “I wish I could.”

“Do you know if they went north or south once they hit the interstate?” That would at least give them some idea.

She shook her head.

“Son of a bitch.” He looked around. “Where’s Luca?”

“With Dom and Austin,” JJ said. “He’s helpin’ them do some updates to the simulation program they designed. The one y’all tested out the other day.”

“And the others?”

“Darius and Becs are at the trainin’ center, helpin’ them from that side. Holly and Elana are still in the conference room. I have them diggin’ up information on Patrick O’Brien. Figured we needed all the ammo we can get.”

“Does Charlie or Jay have anything?”

JJ shook her head. “I talked to them a little while ago. They’re at HQ. I’ve sent them some stuff to look into. Why?”

Brantley shook his head. He had no reason, but he wanted to ensure that his team was dedicated to finding Cindy. All of them. He didn’t like the idea of any of them sitting around, doing nothing while Reese’s mother was missing. He didn’t give a shit if she was helping Toby at this point, she hadn’t volunteered for the duty, which meant their job was to get her back as quickly as possible.

“What’s your gut tellin’ you we should do, boss?”
