“Yeah.”
“He solid?” Trey questioned before he could think better of it.
“A little quick to make assumptions, but he’s thorough.”
Reese continued. “He was serving a warrant to search the house. Honestly, he was not a fount of information.”
“Did you see the warrant?” Evan asked.
Reese nodded. “Search only for the property. Not a seizure warrant.
“Meaning?” Trey asked, feeling like an idiot.
“Means they didn’t have permission to seize any of his property,” Evan explained.
“Correct,” Reese agreed. “It didn’t extend to electronics, so I’m not sure what they were hoping to find.”
“A body, maybe,” Slade noted.
“Ava March,” JJ interrupted, reading from her iPad, “twenty-three-year-old white female. Reported missing six a.m., today, by her…” JJ’s gaze lifted, her eyes widened. “She’s married to Harrison Rivers?”
“Who’s Harrison Rivers?” Slade asked, clearly sensing her disbelief.
“A senator,” Reese supplied.
“Juniorsenator,” JJ noted.
Trey didn’t ask what that meant because he didn’t give a fuck. He wondered what the hell Magnus had gotten himself involved in. He recalled the way Ava had looked the night he’d met her and prayed like hell her politician husband hadn’t done that damage to her face.
“Go on,” Brantley urged.
JJ looked at Trey then back to Brantley. “Her husband claims she went out with friends last night and didn’t come home. According to notes entered this morning, she was last seen with Magnus Storme, a man she was attempting to break off a long-running affair with.”
“Where’d they get that information?” Trey asked.
JJ’s eyes skimmed the screen as her fingers continued to type, but Reese spoke up with, “An anonymous tip. Based on the information the caller offered, they’re focusing their efforts on Magnus.”
“Did the anonymous tipper happen to state what time they saw her with Magnus?” Trey asked, feeling defensive. “Because I got to Moonshiners at eight thirty last night, and he was there by himself.”
“Question is what he didafterhe left,” Slade remarked.
Trey knew exactly what Magnus had done last night after they’d left. He’d had his ass stuffed with a vibrator first, then with Trey’s cock.
Not that he intended to share that information with the team.
“It does not clarify in the case notes,” JJ confirmed. “I’ll see if I can figure out where the anonymous call originated from. It’ll take some time, though.”
“Do that. Anything’ll help,” Brantley stated.
Then Evan asked the very question Trey was thinking. “Is this our case now?”
Brantley nodded. “Since Magnus is a friend of ours, we owe it to him to find out what happened.”
“I hate to be the one to ask this,” Baz said, glancing between Trey and Brantley, “but are we certain hedidn’tdo this? I mean, I know y’all consider him a friend, but how well do you really know him?”
“We’re certain,” Brantley and Trey said at the same time.
Although Trey did not want to go into detail with his teammates, he would bet his life that Magnus did not have anything to do with Ava’s disappearance. Based on what Trey had witnessed between the two of them on New Year’s, Magnus cared for her. If he were a betting man, he would put his money on the husband. The night he’d met Ava, she’d been sporting a bloody lip, and he had a damn good guess who was responsible for it.
