Trey’s back straightened as he turned to face his brother. “What’s goin’ on?”
Brantley simply stared at him for a long moment.
“What?” Trey felt the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s Magnus.”
A cold chill slithered down Trey’s spine as he slowly stood up, eyes pinned on his brother, waiting for more information.
“When did you last see him?” Brantley asked.
Frowning, Trey tried to figure out what that had to do with anything.
“Trey? I need to know. Did he leave the bar with you last night?”
“Why?”
“Don’t play dumb with me, Trey. Did you or did you not see Magnus after you left Moonshiners?”
“Yeah,” he lamented. “Why’s that matter?”
Brantley’s exhale sounded a hell of a lot like relief.
“What the fuck is goin’ on?” Trey demanded.
“Mouth, boy,” Frank scolded.
Trey ignored him.
Brantley continued with, “What time did he leave your place?”
Trey shook his head. “I amnotanswerin’ any more of your fuckin’ questions till you tell me what the hell’s goin’ on.”
Brantley stared him down, his lips pursing as he breathed through his nose.
Trey stood his ground. No fucking way was he going into detail until someone told him something.
“Goddammit, Brantley, what the—”
“The police just picked up Magnus.”
Trey’s entire body stilled, and his responding, “What?” came out a little higher-pitched than he would’ve liked.
“Tesha’s trainer?” Frank asked, moving closer, coffee cup in hand.
“Yeah.”
“Start from the beginning,” Iris insisted, stepping around the island, her soft tone morphing into the one Trey was all too familiar with. Iris Walker might seem passive in spirit, but the woman had raised seven children, so beneath that sweet exterior was the heart of a lion.
“What happened to Magnus?” Frank asked.
Great. And now Trey’s parents were going to find out that Trey had been mixing it up with a twenty-six-year-old for the last fucking year. And he’d thought his day couldn’t get any better.
Brantley exhaled, his full attention on Trey. “Right now, Reese knows very little. Aside from the fact they’re cartin’ Magnus down to Round Rock PD for questioning.”
Questioning.
Trey continued to breathe, pretending he wasn’t a little freaked at the knowledge. What business did the police have with Magnus? And what the hell were they questioning him for? More importantly, why did Trey feel the need to defend the man?
