I gave her a moment to open the envelope. I knew she had by her startled gasp.

“At the moment, I’m the only one who knows about that. Whatever plan you have to hurt Emily ends now, or I will gladly take that information to Donald. What do you think he’ll say when he learns all the sordid details ofyourlife?”

“You wouldn’t dare?”

“Trust me when I tell you, you don’t want to test me.”

She huffed. “Fine. You have my word. I will leave her be.” There was a soft chuckle. “I cannot say the same for Rhett.”

Before I could ask her what she meant, the call disconnected. I considered calling her back, but I didn’t have the patience for her bullshit.

“Betty, I’ll be out for a couple of hours,” I said to my assistant as I walked out the door.

Twenty minutes later, I strolled into Delta June’s, my heart beating rapidly in my chest although I hadn’t exerted myself. I’d merely worked my nerves into a jumbled fucking mess wondering what Rhett was telling Emily. All this time, I’d believed Kitty to be the real threat, and I had focused my attention on getting the ammunition necessary to stop her. Not once had I considered Rhett would come out from the hole he’d been hiding in.

Kieran was right. I should’ve told Emily everything from the beginning. He’d told me that one day she would learn the truth and if I wasn’t the one to give it to her, who knows how she would react. I hadn’t heeded his warning because I honestly hadn’t expected Rhett to come forward. I hadn’t considered him a threat. That was a mistake I would never make again.

I made my way up to the fifth floor, strolled into the reception space, and saw Zena and Emmett talking quietly, their expressions reflecting their discomfort with the situation.

“Mr. Montgomery.” Emmett launched to his feet. “Is everything all right?”

“You tell me,” I said, glancing at Emily’s closed office door then back to them.

Emmett shrugged. “I don’t know. Her father’s here.”

I squared my shoulders and moved to her door. I took a deep breath, rapped my knuckles twice to announce my presence, then opened the door.

Emily was sitting at her desk, Rhett in the guest chair across from her, his back to me.

“Knox.” Her eyes were wide, her surprise evident.

I stepped into the space, moving around so that Rhett wouldn’t have to crane his neck to see me.

“Why are you here?” I asked him directly, pinning my stare on his face, ensuring he saw my hatred.

He was dressed impeccably in a bespoke suit, his salt and pepper hair slicked back, his face clean-shaven. It was apparent he’d lost some weight in the past couple of years, but he looked strong and healthy. Not to mention determined.

“Knox,” he crooned as though we were the best of friends. “It’s good to see you again.”

I narrowed my eyes, repeated the question.

“I came to see my daughter.”

My attention shifted to something laid out on Emily’s desk. The instant she saw me looking at it, she closed it and tucked it away.

“Last I checked, that wasn’t a crime,” Rhett said with a chuckle.

“We both know you don’t give a damn about her,” I told Rhett, peering back at him. The bastard didn’t do anything without expectation. He damn sure didn’t visit his daughter just to catch up.

Emily’s soft gasp had me glancing her way. I could see the horror on her face, knew I was too late. He’d already told her his version of things.

“I have a proposal for her,” Rhett said smugly. “Figured now that she was at the helm where she belongs, we can do great things together.”

“Not in this lifetime,” I growled.

“Knox,” Emily snapped.

I cut my gaze to her. “What?”
