Our foreheads touched.

Az tensed and pulled away. “I’m sorry, Mia. I have to go. This is where it ends.”

My hands dropped to my sides as I watched him stride through the door and vanish from my life.

Epilogue

“Mia!” Serena called out as she pushed into my apartment, clad in an all-black suit, with Hendrix on her shoulder. “I have your pigeon, and I have news.”

My lips cracked into a grin as I held out a hand toward my pigeon. He cooed, hopped off Serena’s shoulder, and landed on my arm. It had been a full week since I’d seen him, and I’d feared the worst. Had he flown off into the great city, never to be seen again?

But no, he was here.

Serena had found him.

“First, thank you,” I said as I strode straight toward the kitchen to rustle up some bread for Hendrix. “And two, please give me the news immediately. While I’m grateful for my job, being a receptionist at a publishing company is boring as hell.”

She stopped short and arched a brow. “So, you haven’t found out anything about Jon Snow’s fate yet?”

I laughed. “No, Serena. I’m a receptionist, not an editor. And those books are published by an entirely different house anyway.”

“Yeah, yeah.” She stabbed her finger into my chest. “But if you do hear anything, I need you to tell me as soon as possible.”

“It’s a deal,” I said with a nod. “Now, what’s your news?”

“Ah.” Her smile dropped. “Big stuff is happening in the supernatural world. My bosses are going crazy. Lucifer arrived in Manhattan yesterday.”

All the blood drained from my face. I sat hard on the stool beside my kitchen counter. “Lucifer’s here.”

Logically, I’d known this was coming. He was always going to leave Hell to investigate Rafael’s claims. And there was nothing to worry about. The little parlor trick at the ball had convinced Eisheth that Az hadn’t changed sides. She’d pass that on to Lucifer, and he’d go on his merry way back to Hell.

I didn’t have anything to worry about. And even if he came looking for me, he’d never find me. I was no longer Mia McNally now. I went by Luna instead.

“He’s coming by the offices tomorrow to look around.” She grimaced. “Seems he found out we’re Az’s lawyers, and he wants to take a look at some of his contracts.”

“Wait.” My stomach dropped. “Can he do that?”

“He can literally do whatever he wants. No one is going to stand up to the King of Hell.”

“Right…Az doesn’t have any incriminating deals on record with you, does he?”

She shrugged. “Honestly, I have no idea. I’ve never worked with his contracts, and I don’t have access to them. Only the partners do. I tried to have a sneaky look today, but I couldn’t get past the login screen. Anyway, it’s probably fine. Az is smart. He wouldn’t have left behind evidence.”

“Right. It’s probably fine,” I repeated. “If there was anything incriminating there, he would have taken care of it.”

“Exactly.” She patted me on the knee and pressed her lips together.

I narrowed my eyes. “So, then why do you still look so worried?”

“Well, there’s another thing. I don’t know if it’s just a rumor.”

My gut twisted. “What is it, Serena?”

“I need you to stay calm, and—”

“Tell me what it is,” I said, fisting my hands around the edge of the stool. “Just give it to me straight.”

“You’ll stay calm?”
