“I need to talk to my brothers.”

“Trust me. You want to hear this.”

“I’ll make you a counteroffer.” I take a step closer and crouch low so we’re looking at one another at eye level. “Give mesomething to prove that you’re not trying to play us, and I’ll make sure my brothers agree to grant you freedom.”

Finn doesn’t even hesitate.

“There’s a document… Someone close to your family… is trying to destroy you…from the inside.”

My pulse spikes as his words register.

Is this the situation with Stephen all over again?

“I don’t believe you.”

Finn’s eyes flash. He knows my family would never risk turning our backs on such a threat, especially after what happened with Stephen.

If we hadn’t caught him when we did, he would have handed Ciara over to Declan Walsh from right under Ronan’s nose.

If Riley is in similar danger…

My chest tightens.

If Finn has to walk for me to uncover the threat, then so be it. I’ll do anything to make sure Riley is safe.

“I have the original on my laptop… But if you want names…realproof… you’ll have to make this deal happen.”

I’m already dialing Brennan’s number as I exit Finn’s cell. I need tothink, and I can’t do that when I’m breathing in air that reeks of piss.

Stepping outside, I put my phone to my ear and wait for my brother to pick up his damn phone.

“About fucking time,” I snap when he finally answers. “I need you to break into Finn’s apartment and find his laptop.”

“Get Doyle to do it,” Brennan mumbles, sleepily. “He took over my shift until tonight.”

“I don’t want Doyle, I want you.”

“Why? What’s in Finn’s apartment?”

“I don’t have time for twenty questions, Brennan. I need you to just do as I ask.”

“Jeez, fine I’ll do it. Give me an hour.”

“You have twenty minutes. Call me when you have the laptop.”

I pace back and forth in front of the warehouse, kicking the gravel beneath my feet as I wait for Brennan to call me back.

Every few minutes, I stop and open up my call list, my finger hovering over Ronan’s name. But then my conscience gets the better of me, and I shut off the screen and stuff it back in my pocket.

There’s a reason Ronan put me in charge, and not just because he needed to step away to focus on Ciara. He trusts me to make the right decisions for our family, so I need to put aside my own insecurities at being nothing but the muscle and approach this situation critically.

When my phone lights up with Brennan’s call, my pulse spikes as I put it to my ear.

“So, brother, I take it you needed me to look into some cryptic-looking document?”

I frown. “How did you know?”

“Hazarded a guess. Besides, it was literally saved on the desktop under our family name. I figured this was what you needed me to look into.”
