It Counts

Becky

April 16, 1995

My dearest Remi,

He kissed me. Not my lips. My neck. It counts.

I was starting to think I’d imagined the way he looks at me sometimes.

Like he feelsthis too and hates himself for it.

But tonight, he forgot to hold back.

And I saw what happens when he doesn’t.

I want him.

That should probably scare me more than it does.

I think he could become powerful. Dangerous.

I could help him get there.

And if I do it right…

I could get there too.

I can see it now.

How we could change things.

Him and me.

Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten why I came here.

You.

I’ll never forget you.

Love always,

Becky

PS. He lives in a mansion. A real one. Almost a castle. The kind princes and princesses live in. But half the doors are locked. I waited until he fell asleep and then tried them all. Why would he do that? Invite me here and then lock me out? It’s not only the rooms he won’t let me into. It’s him. I don’t know how yet, but I’m going to find a way in.

Chapter twenty-six

The next morning, Carrson steps into the kitchen and stops short.

Not slows.

Stops.
