I traced the thought through, along the chain of people. Shade to Everly to Genevieve to Arran. Arran who had this address.
“Then I don’t have a choice in hiding anymore.”
“Course ye do. I have other places we can go.”
“And an apartment in the warehouse.”
Something flashed in his eyes.
A tremble started in my limbs. I lifted my chin, suddenly exhausted. “I don’t want to be alone right now.”
“Go back to bed, Dixie.”
“What if I don’t want to?”
I searched his face, seeking heat.
I found fear in his answer.
“Go anyway. For both our sakes.”
Chapter 14
AMarchant Son
“Oscar Sullivan has gone missing.”
My mother raised her head. “Oh?”
“His board of directors is panicked. Cameras at his house show him arriving home late but nothing else. No sign of forced entry. Nothing but an open window in a blind spot and a blood trail that stops at the street.”
“What of it?”
I stared. “Without him, the vote can’t go ahead.”
She sighed.
Heat climbed my spine. “This is important.”
An arched eyebrow marked a return to her book and my only answer. No instruction, no call to find him, no other options. Leaving me out, again.
Fine. She could underestimate me all she wanted.
The vote had to happen, and if that meant another body, so be it.
I just needed the right person to disappear.
Chapter 15
Mila
A knock came at the door to Cassie’s apartment, and my friend leapt up to answer it, Lovelyn entering the room. They hugged, and I skipped over and embraced my friend next.
“Thank God you’re back.”
Lovelyn moved with us to the sofa, setting her purple flower-embroidered bag down on the floor. “Thank Tyler. He must have an alert out for Kane’s name, because he rang as soon as the article went live. If we’d woken up to it, we’d have been fleeing in broad daylight. Not that Kane would care, but he worried about my safety in case we were chased. Interest in this case is feral.” She peeked at me and winced. “As you’d know better than anyone.”
My shoulders slumped. “Tell me about it. I’ve had endless calls from journalists and randoms spewing hate. I don’t know how they got my number, but it’s out there. I even changed it, but within a day, that leaked as well. The culprit has to be the solicitors because they were the only ones I’d given it to at that point, but they denied it.”
