He canceled our wedding
He completely humiliated me, and I don’t know howI’lleverface friends and family again without feeling embarrassed about the whole thing
He cost me a lot of money by canceling the weddingone day before, rather than three months before, when we would have lost deposits but not entire costs
He’s a fucking selfish little wankface and I hate him
Reasons to call Matthew:
I love him and miss him and I don’t understand how this happened
Conclusion:
Chucked my phone out the bedroom window
Decided to listen to “Total Eclipse of the Heart”
Realized all my music is on my phone
Remembered that I just threw my phone out the window
Wailed “Why is the world so shit?” at the top of my lungs
Remembered I have a laptop
Used my laptop to play “Total Eclipse of the Heart”
Sobbed into my pillow
Problem solved (for now)
CHAPTER TWO
“How can we ruin Matthew’s life?”
Leo and I share a look as Ruby paces around my room, swigging from a bottle of beer. There is alotof alcohol stacked up in Dad’s garage. A whole wedding’s worth, in fact. It took Ruby about ten minutes after she arrived to head straight there and return with a box of selected beers and wine to fill the fridge. Thanks to my job, we also had a huge supply of spirits ready to go behind the bar, so I won’t have to buy any alcoholic beverage for a couple of years at least.
That is potentially the one good thing that has come out of this whole mess.
The unlimited supply of wine.
“I’m being serious,” Ruby says, her forehead furrowed in concentration. “We need to get revenge. I’m not talking about murdering him or anything. Just something we can do that completely destroys his life forever.”
“Well, I’m glad you cleared up the murder question,” Leo mutters.
“Death would be too easy a way out,” Ruby seethes. “There are worse things we can do.”
Leo looks mildly panicked.
Dad was right to insist I invite friends down for the weekend. I am grateful to have them here, especially after the goodbye with Adrian in the early hours of this morning. I felt so adriftwatching him get in the car to go to the airport. We’ve always been close and he’s been such a rock the last few days.
Ruby and Leo have really made me smile today, like properly smile, and laugh, too, and that makes me feel a tiny bit hopeful for life in general.
Not much. But still.
Ruby, Leo, and I were all in the same halls in first year of university and bonded straightaway, becoming close friends right from fresher’s week. We ended up living together for the rest of our three years there, and moved to London together, too. We’ve seen each other through it all: boyfriends and girlfriends, breakups, exams, new jobs, family dramas.
A few years ago, when Leo and Ruby kissed on a drunken night out, I was (a) shocked that they were attracted to one another, even after copious amounts of vodka, (b) horrified that they could risk our beautifully balanced friendship group, and (c) confused, because when I really thought about it, they actually seemed like a great couple. How had I not considered it before?
