I laugh and then look back down at the photo. It is a good one of me, which is really quite rare. I’ve never felt especially photogenic. And I haven’t thought about posting on social media in a while, because I wanted to hide away from the world, but I’m not sure I feel so hesitant anymore.
“I think I’d like to post this for my friends to see,” I say out loud.
“Then I think you should,” he replies.
He waits patiently while I log into my Instagram account, which takes me a couple of tries because I can’t remember the password I use for it (“MattandFreya1,” it turns out; I’ll be changing that as soon as I get back to the hotel), and then I take a bit of time swiping through the filters.
“What do you think?” I ask, showing him it in black-and-white. “This one is quite classy and arty.”
He wrinkles his nose. “No. I wouldn’t bother with a filter.”
“Of course, I bet you’re really against filters,” I say, smiling to myself as I carry on trying the different ones on the photo. “I wouldn’t have thought you were a fan of social media.”
“I have nothing against filters or people using social media,” he says firmly. “I may not have it but we use it as an effective marketing tool at work. I just don’t think that picture needs a filter.”
“Because I’m so naturally beautiful?” I joke, swishing my hair dramatically behind my shoulder.
“But, of course!” He laughs. “I also like it with all its colors.”
I look back down at the picture, going back to examine it in its original state. I see what he means. Maybe it doesn’t need any tweaking.
“What should I caption it?” I ask.
He shakes his head. “No caption, in my opinion. It doesn’t need one.”
I take a deep breath and click on the post button. It loads before appearing up on my Instagram feed. “It’s up.”
“Yeah?”
“Here it is.” I hold out my screen so he can take a look. “What do you think?”
“It’s a knockout.”
“As you can see, I took your advice and didn’t put up a caption. I’ve let your photography do the talking.”
“That,” he says, standing so close next to me, I feel another jolt of electricity race down my spine, “and that beaming smile.”
