“Were you thinking about me?”
“Yes.After that, I felt like I was having an affair, so I tried to put my whole self into our relationship, but it always felt fake.”
“I’ve never had a girlfriend.”
Her mouth fell open.“Are you kidding?”
“No.I was obsessed with you in high school, and then after I ran into that fortune-teller, I didn’t even try.I just prayed for you to come home or be able to take the time to find you.I’m glad I didn’t find you when you were with ...you know.I don’t know what I would have done.”
She exhaled.“Wow, I don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything.I’ve known for years, so I’m used to this.It would help if you had a little time.I do have to ask if you believe any of this?”
Hanna relaxed her shoulders.“I ...yes, I do.It just feels right or something being with you.God, it’s crazy, but it feels right.”
“That’s the way I feel.I knew years ago that if I couldn’t have you, I’d die a bachelor.”
Tears came to her eyes—the thought of how lonely that would have been. For him not to feel a woman’s love or hold his child.
He wiped the tear away with his thumb.“Let’s go find a movie on Netflix, and maybe we can cuddle.”
“I’d like that very much.”
Chapter Fourteen
For the next ten days, they spent as much time together as they could. He still had a ranch to run, and after talking to her boss, she was working part-time from home. She tried to do most of her work when he was busy so they could spend all their free time together.
She was amazed at how quickly their lives came together and how much the house felt like home.It was like they’d been together for years instead of days.
Blake helped her get her mother’s old house leveled because it would have cost too much to fix everything her sister had destroyed. She was pleased that she was able to find several more pictures that could be fixed and a figurine of her mom’s that she’d had as long as Hanna remembered.
The times she cried because she missed her mom so much, Blake was always there, held her in his arms, and gave her the support and love she needed to heal.
The first rocky moment they’d had was when she planned to go back to Austin to pack up her stuff and move it to the ranch. He didn’t want her out of his sight. She knew it was a trust issue, and if he got upset about it, she felt it would have taken their relationship back a step.
Blake walked into the room Hanna still used. They were taking their time getting to know each other before they became intimate, to find her packing a bag.
