“To Skye’s?” he asked as I got inside.

I gave him a nod. “As fast as you can get me there.”

His lips curled into a small grin as he climbed behind the steering wheel. As we pulled out onto the street and I saw the heavy traffic, I was glad he was behind the wheel. Kurt was a certified tactical driver, and he put his training into practice now. I prided myself on being a good driver, but this man had James Bond 007, Liam Neeson inTakenlevel skills.

He maneuvered effortlessly between trucks and cars. He cut down alleyways that I wasn’t even sure were wide enough for the SUV to fit through driving at forty miles an hour. He made turns on corners so tight we were briefly on two wheels.

When we pulled up in front of Skye’s house, I felt like I’d just survived a chase in an action movie, and I couldn’t be any happier about it. The drive should have taken twenty-minutes, but he got me to her door in seven. He was definitely getting a raise.

Before we even came to a full stop, I jumped out and ran up the steps of her building. When I pulled on the glass door, it was locked. I was frantically scanning the call box for Skye’s name when I heard a voice behind me.

“Well, Mr. Locke, are you here to see Miss Taylor again?”

I turned and saw the man with the fedora Mr….

Fuck.I was normally so good with names but right now my mind was blanking.

“Yes, sir.”

He grinned as he leisurely pulled his key ring out of his pocket. I watched as he took his time selecting the key he wanted before gently sliding it into the lock on the door.

Come on, come on, come on,I thought in my head.

“You seem like you’re in a hurry, son.”

“Yes, sir.”

His eyes twinkled as he asked, “You here to tell her ya love her again?”

“No, sir. I’m here to ask her to marry me.”

His face lit up, and he pushed the door open. As soon as there was enough clearance for me to fit through, I rushed inside and up the twelve flights of stairs. By the time I reached the top, I was gasping for air.

I thought about taking a second to compose myself but decided against it.

Lifting my hand, I knocked twice on the door before I heard the lock turn.

As it was opening, I said, “Skye, I—”

My words fell off when I saw Ri standing in front of me.

Her face split in a knowing smile as she called out, “Skye! I don’t think it’s too late.”

“What?” Skye asked as she came around the corner from the kitchen. She was holding her phone in her hand. When she saw me, her lips parted, and her cheeks flushed.

It had been a week since I’d seen her, and I’d known that I missed her, but seeing her again actually caused my chest to ache with the pain of not seeing her. I never wanted to go seven days without her again.

“Are you still on with Selena?” I asked as I walked into the apartment, as she stood there staring at me in shock.

She shook her head.

“Callie called because she heard the podcast,” Ri filled me in.

“Nick’s here,” Skye said into the phone. “Let me call you—”

“No,” I stopped her. “Let her stay on the line. Put it on speaker.”

Skye’s hand was shaking as she lowered the phone and stared at the screen. “I don’t know what… what do I…?”
