I hung up and called Maddox. It rang twice before going to voicemail. He had to be in a meeting. That was the only reason he’d ignore my call. I tried Nick but it rang several times before going to voicemail.

Shit.I left messages for both men giving them the highlights of the situation, Mrs. G had a heart attack. She’s in SFGH. Lexi is at the hospital in the waiting room with Sadie. We just landed in Sydney, turning right back around. Then ending the call telling them to call me immediately.

My head was spinning as Mia walked back in.

“Do you have the hospital?” I reached out for her phone.

“On hold.”

“Are we headed back?”

“We will be. We’re getting systems check, refueling, and clearing a flight plan.”

“We need to go now!” I slammed my fist down on the marble armrest.

Mia didn’t even blink at my outburst. “I know. We will.”

I could feel myself beginning to unravel. This couldn’t happen. Not again. And it was my fault. Mrs. G should be retired, not taking care of Lexi. It was too much for her.

My phone rang and I answered it without even looking to see who it was.

“Hello.”

“Your message was breaking up, but I got the gist. I’m on my way to the hospital,” Maddox said. “I was in San Jose so I’m not sure how long it will take.”

“Thank you.” It was the first piece of news that started to calm down my racing heart.

“Who is Lexi with? The phone cut out.”

“Sadie Burke.”

“Sad—Cupcake Girl?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.” I had no clue why Sadie Burke was with my daughter at the hospital.

“Any news on Mrs. G?”

“Not yet.”

“I’ll call you when I have Lexi.”

“Thanks.” I hung up and heard Mia speaking to someone.

She handed me the phone. “They are transferring you.”

I put the phone to my ear and heard elevator music playing as Mia filled me in on the latest update on the flight plan.

“Hello, this is Dr. Travis, are you calling regarding Joanna Garrett?”

“I am.”

“Mrs. Garrett is in stable condition. She has regained consciousness but is asleep now.”

I nodded, trying to convince myself that was good news. She’d regained consciousness. That was good. The last time I got this call, Ash and AJ never regained consciousness. The hospital put Ash in a medically induced coma and delivered Lexi. AJ was pronounced DOA.
