Me

how about you try to break into my cabin?

Callie

what??

There’s not another message for a full thirty seconds. She’s probably screaming into the void about how crazy I am. Then the three little dots start blinking.

Callie

I’m a shit stalker, as we both know

Me

*cringing at being called a stalker*

Callie

that makes you cringe? I mean, really?

I take a few steps and stop halfway out of the store, my back holding the door open. Is she… flirting with me? Fuck, I hope so. Someone appears behind me, and I step through the door onto the Main Street sidewalk to get out of the way, relief cascading through me.

Me

I can give you some pointers I guess, since you think I’m so good at it.

Callie

that’s…really weird

But then she adds an eye roll emoji, and my mouth twitches up into a smile. She doesn’t hate me. Not yet.

Me

I’ll give you my address in case you need it, because obviously you couldn’t find it last time

Callie

ouch

Then I text her my address. As if she could even get close to the cabin without me knowing. And she should not be doing something dangerous like that, especially as she doesn’t really know me, and the skeletons in my closet are pretty dark.

This clearly is just some light flirting to go along with some light stalking. I bet beneath her spiky exterior, she’s sweet as one of my apple pies.

But it’s not like someone like her would actually go for someone like me. And it’s not like I’d want her to. She deserves the pure life she’s been fantasizing about, and there’s no room for me.

Chapter 18

Guard Cat

CALLIE

“Iam not a boring-ass good girl,” I whisper to myself as I quietly close the door to my car, which is parked on Wes’s neighbor’s driveway. He practically invited me to try to break in to his house, and while that would normally be a bonkers idea, I trust Wes.

I’m also feeling the inspiration to prove Shane wrong. I hate that some of his last words haunt me so much. That man made me feel like I’m not good enough, and I’m not sure I’ll ever get over it.

It’s almost pitch dark out, which makes sense as it’s the middle of the night. Is it smart to go down a private driveway when I don’t know for sure that the owners are down in Florida or wherever for the winter? Nope, it’s sure not. But their driveway hasn’t been shoveled recently, so I’m pretty sure they aren’t here. Now, I’m not convinced I’ll be able to drive my car back up the driveway due to all the snow, but that’s a problem for later.
