Chapter ten
Jakeopenedthedoorto his favorite neighborhood spot, Saucy’s Bar and Grill, and Olivia walked through ahead of him. She’d agreed to come to trivia night, even though it was a Tuesday, and they both had work in the morning. Makeup could put an extra layer of concealer under his eyes tomorrow. Spending time with her was worth it.
They were seated in a booth by the wall of big screens. Instead of showing sports, they were tuned into a computer game. The screens had the login information showing, with a countdown to game time. They’d gotten there with fifteen minutes to spare, which should be just enough time to order their food and get their team set up. The winning team got a gift certificate they could use on their next trip.
And if there was anything Jake loved, it was a competition.
“How does this work?” Olivia pointed up at the screens.
“We pick a team name for the table, and we give our answers via the phone app.” He scanned the QR code on the menu and brought up the app. “I’ve come here with my buddy Caleb before. But let’s choose our own team name.”
Olivia cupped her chin in her hand, her elbow propped up on the table. “Is it anonymous?”
“Yeah, even the prizes are done through the app. If we win you’ll just have to come back with me to cash in.” He winked.
She twirled a straw through her water. “Let’s be Team Moonlight.”
“Team Moonlight?”
She leaned forward. “Like, fighting evil by moonlight? Or the Moonlight Knight?”
Oh man, this girl was so nerdy! He was a goner. Jake grinned as he typed. “Team Moonlight it is.”
“Now what’s good to eat?”
“Saucy’s is famous for its barbecue wings, and cheese steaks the size of footballs. But everything’s good, honest.”
Her eyes almost popped out of her head when he mentioned the cheese steaks.
“That sounds like a lot of food.”
“You could always take it for lunch tomorrow.”
She tapped her finger against her chin, considering. “Not a bad idea. Then I don’t have to stay up late to pack anything.”
They both ordered the giant sandwiches just in time for the game to begin.
“What is the sport in the movie,Field of Dreams?” the giant screen asked. Heads turned down to phones to play.
“Aw man, is this allsportstrivia?” The disappointed look on her face cut to his core.
“Not all of it. There’s a lot of different categories. It’s all random.” He checked off their answer on the phone app.Baseball.
When the screen lit up that they got the correct answer, he flipped the phone around to show her.
“What is the favorite food of the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles?”
“Too easy,” they said in unison, then laughed. Jake putPizzain as their answer and clicked “submit.”
The questions at the beginning were always easy stuff. They ate their sandwiches when they arrived, enjoying the game.
“Who the hell is George Thorogood?” Olivia asked him after one question had them stumped.
“I don’t know. Let’s say his band wasThe Eagles.”
“Sure, sounds as good as anything else on there. I’m useless at music trivia.” She was still munching on her fries.
That was the wrong answer.
