Curiosity gets the better of me. I want to know what she’s up to, so I’ll play her game.

Rina:

Awesome. I’m stopping by around four, then. Be home.

I instinctually roll my eyes. I swear, the woman never asks me, just demands my presence when she has a problem or idea. And because I’m a sucker for my siblings, I cave every single time.

Me:

Yeah, sure. Let me just work my day around you.

Rina:

See you later!

I chuckle at her answer. She may give me a hard time most days, but she’s still my sister and I know it comes from a place of love. At least, I hope it does.

I dig into my sandwich without continuing to analyze the reason Rina does anything. Pulling up my calendar, I make sure I’m able to be here at four. I see a new meeting has popped up, so I pull up the messaging system and start typing.

Ledger Hutton:

Hey. I just saw that three-thirty meeting get added. Is there any way to push it to tomorrow? I have to be home by four today.

Ainsley Mathews:

Yeah, I can move it. I’ll call them and reschedule. I’ll also block your calendar so nothing else gets put there.

Ledger Hutton:

You’re a lifesaver, thank you.

Ainsley Mathews:

Not a problem. Let me know if you need anything else.

Outside of my minor obsession with her, Ainsley is a hard worker. When I decided to hire an assistant, I was expecting the bare minimum in terms of work. And I certainly wasn’t expecting someone to come in and make everything more efficient. She’s gone above and beyond, and I’m impressed by her daily.

Now, you need to figure out how to come clean. The longer you wait, the worse it will be.

Fuck, when did my life get this complicated? When my siblings came into their own careers, my life got exponentially simpler. Now, it seems like things just went right back to muddled. I know it’s by my own doing, but it’s like a train crash that I can’t stop watching. I don’t quite know how to dig myself out here.

My eye snags on the clock on the microwave, and I realize I’m about to be late to my next job—and I’m never late. This shit with Ainsley is starting to affect my job, and that’s how I know I’m running out of time. I just need to grow some balls and tell her.

I’ll get on that, right after I talk to Rina tonight.

I’m barely able to walk through the front door when Rina pops up out of nowhere.

“You were almost late. I was about to send out a search party.”

“That’s dramatic,” I murmur, dropping off my keys and sunglasses on the entry table.

“Okay, so I need a favor,” Rina says with her owlish eyes that I can never resist.

“What?” I groan.

“I have this friend that I promised to set up, and the guy I had on the line canceled. You don’t have to actually like her, but if you could take her out to dinner, I would owe you for my entire life,” she practically begs.

“You owe me your entire life whether I do this or not,” I say.
