“How did you know that?”
I pinched the bridge of my nose, cursing myself for being too stupid. “Mad Dog’s crazy ramblings… He said something about a woman and maybe two vampires. I think she’s Venom’s mate, and she’s been helping him today.”
Another pause. “Get the boy home safe. We’re bringing her to the house and picking up your brother on the way.”
He hung up, and I followed his orders. When I arrived home, the prospects at the gates were grim. I was too angry I couldn’t sink my claws into the fucker or save my brother from whatever shit he was about to do. I didn’t need another problem. “What the fuck happened?”
One of them stepped forward, shaking, his head tilted down. “It’s Dasher’s sister.”
CHAPTER 16
VIXEN
I put on my jacket, not because I was cold, but to hide the miserable state of my suit; the rush from the jump and the successful break out had me warmed up nicely.
A huge grin stretched my mouth the whole way to campus, and my body was still shaking with excitement as I entered the IT building. Professor Khapoor, Rav, was an old college friend. He would help me with the flash drive. The nerd grew the best pot back in sophomore year. My ex and I scored from him all the time. Who would have thought he’d be a senior IT professor here now?
I reached the elevator and pressed the button, my heart pounding with triumph and anticipation. A few steps away from uncovering what my brother was hiding, having the evidence I needed to confront him—even blackmail him—and, hopefully, save him from himself before the gang.
The elevator doors opened, and the last face I wanted to see jumped into my peripheral vision.
“Vixen? Back already? What are you doing here this late?” Russell asked.
I clutched my tote reflexively and sped into the elevator, pretending I didn’t hear him.
“Hold it, Vix.”
My finger pushed the buttons with frantic speed, but his hand was faster, waving between the doors before they closed, sending them flying back open. I cursed as he jumped inside, a stupid smile on his face.
“Hey, didn’t you hear me?” he mocked.
I looked up to meet his eyes and feigned a shock. “Oh, Russell. It’s you. Sorry, I didn’t hear you. What are you still doing here? Where’s Kate?”
“I asked you first.”
“About Kate? Sorry, I don’t know where your fiancé is. Which floor?”
He leaned in, his blue gaze and warm breaths on me, the edges of his suit jacket brushing my arms, and pressed number seventeen.
The doors whispered shut. I closed my eyes for a moment. His smell invaded me like a monstrous wave and sent a shiver down my spine. Images of a million moments we’d had such as this when we would kiss, his hand in my hair, his rigid length pressed against me crashed into my head.
The inner havoc he created with one move irritated me.You can’t feel this way for a douche like him.He left you at the altar. He left you at the altar. HE LEFT YOU AT THE ALTAR!
“Everything okay?” he asked.
“Peachy.” I ignored the throb between my legs and stared at the stainless steel ceiling. I could feel his eyes on me still, his breath hot next to my face. The longer we stayed in this tiny, closed in space together, the more my body stirred. The ding to the eleventh floor couldn’t come sooner.
“I must admit I was surprised to see you today.”
I chortled, poker face on. “Scared much?”
“Why would I be?”
“Because I’m going to kick your butt.”
“Is that why you’re here? To kick my butt?”
The elevator dinged. Finally. I stepped out, careful not to touch him on the way as he wasn’t moving to give me enough room. “Don’t flatter yourself. I’m only here because Pattison asked. What can I say? He wants me for this job. Have a good night now.”
