“Yeah, maybe,” I agree, adjusting the lens before looking through it again. But Zane isn’t on his knees. He’s on one. And he’s holding a small box with a ring in it.
I lower the camera, and my mouth falls open. At the same time, the door opens, and Demi snaps multiple photos.
“Got it!” she says, looking through the pictures.
“Oh my god, you are so right, Zane. GM is going to love this,” Hannah says.
But I’m still staring at Zane.
“Ashlyn?” he asks, and I cover my mouth with my hands.
“Oh my god,” I respond, and he smirks.
“Ashlyn…” he says, and suddenly Bentley comes waddling in. He walks over to Zane and grabs onto him, bouncing and babbling, and we both laugh.
“This is so perfect,” Demi says, and the camera flashes some more. “Like, I cannot…”
“Ashlyn,” Zane says again.
“Yes,” I answer. “I will.”
“But I didn’t even ask the question yet,” he says and Bentley shrieks.
“Okay, sorry,” I laugh,
“You are the love of my life. The most beautiful and resilient mother in the world. And I’ve never been surer about anything than I am about you. This isn’t a long speech, but it doesn’t need to be. Because with you, it’s simple. It’s the only thing in my life that’s simple. I love you. And–”
Bentley shrieks again.
“Okay, okay, I’m getting to it,” Zane says. “Ashlyn, will you marry me?”
“Yes,” I say again, and he stands up, sliding the ring onto my finger. Demi takes a few more shots, and we make our way out into the main room where all our friends are.
“She said yes!” he says, holding my hand up in the air. And with that, the room erupts.
“Wait,” I say over the cheering. “How many of you knew he was going to do this?”
“Honestly, it was no secret,” Demi says. I look around and everyone shrugs.
“Well I’m glad I didn’t figure it out,” I say as Hannah pours champagne into glasses for everyone.
“Now that you’re not pregnant, you can enjoy a little bubbly,” she says, handing me the first glass.
“Yes, she can,” Zane says, walking over with Briella and Brennan. Yes, we had twins. Turns out we are really good at jinxing things. “God knows she has earned it.”
We all cheers and everyone enjoys the baby shower. I wanted to throw it once the babies were born because it’s their party too. It’s everyone’s party. As people talk and laugh and eat and drink, Becca plays with Bentley and Zane hands Briella to me.
“I don’t know about you, but I think we throw a great party,” he says, still cradling Brennan.
“Yeah, not too bad considering they’re only two weeks old,” I say, planting a kiss on Briella’s head.
“I have a feeling there will be uninvited guests at this party,” Cal says, looking out the window.
“Don’t tell me the paparazzi are already lurking,” Demi sighs.
“They’re always lurking,” Cal grins.
“So let them,” Zane says, wrapping his free arm around me and pulling me close. “There’s not a thing in this room, in this house, hell, in my whole life that I need to hide. I have everything I could ever want, and I’m going to flaunt it for the world to see.”
“Sounds good to me,” I say, smiling up at him as his lips cover mine. The room grows loud, but it turns into white noise.Because, like he said, it doesn’t matter who’s watching. Nothing matters but us.
