Jeff shook his head. “No way. I’m not letting you buy.”

“Seriously, Jeff, I just dumped my entire drink all over you. Let me do this to feel less guilty.”

He tilted his head. “Fine.” He told the barista his drink order, and Megan paid. Then they stood off to the side and waited for their drinks.

“Not spending Christmas with your family?” Jeff asked.

“We are getting together after I leave here. It doesn’t really matter to us whether we spend it together on the actual day or celebrate early or late. It makes life easier.” She shrugged.

Their drinks were called out, and they took them before walking back to the resort. They stopped near the gondola and turned to face each other.

“I need to run and grab my gear,” Megan said. “I’ll see you later?”

“You bet,” Jeff said.

Megan went inside the resort and over to the elevator. She tucked her hand into her pocket while she waited and felt something in there. Pulling the item out, she found a rolled-up ten-dollar bill.

Jeff.

Megan didn’t bother askingJessa to join her on the mountain since she knew she wouldn’t want to. She did four runs before heading to the lodge to get some lunch. She set her skis in a holder outside before walking inside and looking around. It was pretty quiet since she had missed the lunch rush. But she immediately spotted Noah sitting in the corner with Jeff.

She walked over to the table, but before she could say anything, Noah spotted her. “Hey Megan. Would you like to join us?”

She smiled. “I’d love to.” She took a few minutes to pull off her gloves, coat, and helmet, piling them onto an empty chair before sitting down in another.

“How’s the snow?” Jeff asked.

Megan tilted her head and cracked a smile. “You’ve been skiing all morning too, right?”

His face bloomed red briefly before he smiled back. “But everyone has a different opinion.”

“True. It’s great. I love the powder. I just need to convince Jessa to give it another try.”

Noah barked out a laugh. “Good luck.” Then Noah looked around before leaning in closer and lowering his voice. “You’re both still good to come to the proposal, right? I’m sorry you’re having to fly back so soon after you head home, Megan.”

Megan waved a hand in the air. “Don’t be silly. I love an excuse to come visit, and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Then Noah looked at Jeff. “Would you be able to grab Megan from the airport when she flies in? I don’t want Jessa to be suspicious if I’m leaving the house randomly.”

Jeff’s eyes met Megan’s. “Of course, I can.”

Megan planned to take a rideshare to the resort when she came back to town, but she wouldn’t refuse a ride with Jeff. He was intriguing with his red cheeks and bashful behavior.

“Thank you. Let me give you my number so I can update you on my flight details,” she said. They traded phones, and each entered their numbers into them before swapping back.

“That reminds me.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out the ten-dollar bill she had found earlier, sliding it across the table. “I think you forgot this.”

Jeff chuckled. “Caught me, huh?”

“That was slick. I didn’t even feel you do that. But I already told you, the coffee was on me since I dumped mine on you.”

“All right. All right,” Jeff said, slipping the bill into his pocket. “You win.”

But Megan suspected that wouldn’t be the last time she saw that bill.
