Chase glanced around, clearly aware of the audience now.
“You’re embarrassing yourself,” he muttered.
Savannah laughed bitterly.
“I embarrassed myself when I stayed with you for five years while you tried to convince me I was lucky to have you.”
That hit.
He stepped closer to her.
I moved us backward —subtle, but enough that he didn't have easy access to her.Not that the bastard would need it.He narrowed his eyes at the movement.
“I don't understand why you're behaving like this.Or why you felt the need to bring him here,” he added, shooting me another glare.“He's an unnecessary—”
“Don't you dare insult him.You know nothing about him.”
His eyes flashed.“Oh, I know plenty about yourfriendhere. That doesn't explain why you were in the bathroom with him.”
“Aw, come on, Chasey,” I taunted, smirking his way as my head rested on Savannah’s shoulder.“Doesn't take a genius to figure that out.”
He glared at me, running his tongue across his teeth.
“Besides, what goes on between my woman and me isn't your problem.”
“She isn't yours.Never will be.”
“Trouble, you didn't tell me he was suffering from delusional tendencies,” I said to Savannah, my eyes never leaving his.“If you're looking foryourwoman, you may want to head back inside.”
He inched closer, squaring his shoulders with a taunting smile stretching across his lips.
“She'll never be yours, not in any way that matters.”
She'll never be yours.
She'll never be yours.
She'll never be yours.
The words echoed in my head as we stared each other down, and fuck that—because yes, she was.Mine to tease, mine to laugh with.Mine to bring to the heights he never could. She was mine, just as I was hers.
His gaze shifted back to Savannah.
“So, what, your answer to fixing us is to fuck him?”
She drew back.“Excuse me?”
“That's what you were just doing, isn't it?Fucking him to prove a point to me.Well, marvelous.Point fucking made.”
“Firstly, who I do or don't sleep with is no longer your concern.Secondly, I don't see the point of this conversation.I said everything I needed to say the last time we spoke. You chose your bed, now go find your soon-to-be wife and lie in it.”
“And I told you—”
“You don't get to dictate my life.I'm perfectly happy with Jaxon.”
And though those words warmed my insides, I couldn't tell if she was just saying them for the sake of the contract or if she really meant them.
Chase scoffed.“Happy? What could you possibly be happy about with him?”
