“You’re not going to break up with me again, are you?”
“Of course not.”
“Good. Then let’s have it.”
About to crawl out of her skin with impatience she blurted it out. “I’m pregnant.”
Trevor choked on his beer. “You’re pregnant?” he repeated when he finally quit coughing. “How?”
“The pill can fail sometimes. I don’t know why, unless it was because I took it late a few days. Whatever the reason, I’m pregnant. I’ll confirm it when I go to the doctor. But I’m sure anyway.”
“We’re having a baby.”
“Yes. Are you…are you upset?”
“Upset? Hell, no!” He grabbed her and kissed her, then hugged her. “We’re having a baby!”
“Thank God,” she mumbled into his shirt.
“Are you upset?”
“No. I was surprised but no, I’m happy.”
“This is great.” He jumped up from the couch and left the room. He came back a short time later, grinning like a loon.
“I’ve been waiting for the perfect moment. There couldn’t be a better one.” He pulled a small jeweler’s box out of his pocket and got down on one knee in front of the couch. He opened the box to show a beautiful round diamond solitaire surrounded by smaller diamonds.
She could hardly breathe. She’d hoped he would be happy, or at least not mind too much, but his reaction was way beyond that. And now…
“Jedidiah, I love you. I fell for you the first time I saw you at your sister’s wedding.”
“No you didn’t. You thought I was weird.”
He frowned at her. “Don’t interrupt. Now, where was I? Oh, yes. I thought you were intriguing. And beautiful. And hot.”
She smiled. “I liked you too. It took me a little longer to fall in love with you, though. I fell for you when I found you washing your bike and playing with the dog next door.”
“Why then?”
“You were so cute with the dog. Just like you are with kids. And, well, you have a killer body,” she confessed.
He laughed. “Hell, if I’d known that I’d have stripped down earlier.”
“I was kidding. Kind of.” So call her shallow. Could she help it if she liked his body?
“My knee is starting to hurt. Can I finish?”
“Of course,” she said, stifling a smile.
“Jedidiah Walker, I love you. Will you marry me?”
“Yes! Oh, Trevor, I love you too.” She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him. Then she pulled back and let him slide the ring onto her finger. They kissed again and she wound up sitting with his arm around her, admiring her engagement ring.
“And to think, I was worried you were going to be upset,” she confessed.
“Not a chance. What are we going to name him?”
She laughed. “We have plenty of time to come up with a name for him or her. When did you get the ring?”
