Chapter Twenty-Two

“Ican’t gothrough it again.”

Trevor had tried everything he knew to convince Jedidiah to change her mind. Everything, including great sex. But she wouldn’t give them a chance. She was too stuck in the past. Maybe she was right. Maybe they simply weren’t meant to be together.

“You’re making a mistake, but I can’t stop you.”

“Goodbye, Trevor.”

He didn’t respond. He watched her walk out the door and out of his life. Tempted to throw something, he looked around, but all he saw were tablets, laptops, and other work necessities. So he didn’t.

Not long after Jedidiah left, Trevor’s phone rang. He almost didn’t answer it but thought what the hell? He wasn’t doing anything but moping. He sure as shit wasn’t working.

He picked up. “Yeah.”

“You up for an initiation?” Justin asked.

“No.” The last thing he wanted to do was put on his happy face and see a bunch of people.

“What’s wrong? More trouble in paradise?”

He’d told Justin that he and Jedidiah had broken up but he hadn’t gone into detail other than saying she was finishing out her two weeks’ notice. “She’s gone.”

“Jedidiah? The two weeks aren’t up.”

“Doesn’t matter. She’s gone. For good this time.”

“Oh, man, that sucks.”

“It does.”

“You really love her, don’t you?”

“Duh.” Wasn’t that freaking obvious?

“Initiations always make you feel better. You should come.”

“Maybe next time.”

“Okay, but just in case let me give you the info.”

Even though he had no intention of going he let Justin give him the details. Otherwise Justin would have nagged the shit out of him.

He ended the call and tried to work. But that was pointless. He couldn’t concentrate. All he could think about was Jedidiah. Jedidiah as he’d last seen her before she walked out of his life. Jedidiah, soft and satisfied after making love. Beautiful. Happy. Until she said she couldn’t do it anymore. And she’d broken his damn heart.

A part of him was really pissed. She said she loved him but she still walked out on him. Because he was a ‘hero’ for God’s sake. Yes, he and Justin had gone after the shooter, but it had been a calculated risk. Not even much of a risk once the guy stopped shooting and come down from the roof. It had been ridiculously easy to apprehend him and wait for the backup from the cops.

He didn’t think that was the only problem. He thought it was symptomatic of a deeper problem Jedidiah had. Like the death of her fiancé. Who’d been an adrenaline junkie and his death had ruined her for…anyone else? Or just him? Regardless, she had the problem and it wasn’t going away. What if he quit BFK? Would that change her mind about the two of them? Or were the two of them simply not meant to be together?

He didn’t want to quit BFK. He got a lot of satisfaction from being part of the group and seeing the difference they made to the kids. But was being a part of BFK more important to him than Jedidiah was? Hell, no. But neither could he give up something so worthwhile because Jedidiah was being so unreasonable.

First, he was going to the initiation. And he was going to Ricky’s trial. It didn’t sit right with him not to. He’d made a promise to the kid that he’d be there. No way could he renege on that promise.

Hello, rock, meet hard place.

Someone was bangingon her door. She knew it was Damaris. Her sister had been calling her for two days. She must have gotten tired of getting no answer and come to see for herself what was going on.
