Chapter Fifteen

“I’m meeting Damarisfor lunch,” Jedidiah told Trevor the next day. “The Diner. Want something?”

He looked up from the computer, propping his glasses on his head. “Roast beef sandwich and french fries, please.” He stood and stuck a hand in his back pocket, pulling out his wallet. “Thanks. This should cover it,” he said, handing her a twenty.

“I might be a while. Depends on how much she talks about the new mare they just got. She’s super excited about her. Champion bloodline, absolutely beautiful, great temperament, et cetera, et cetera.”

“Sounds like you’ve already met this horse.”

“No, but I know how Damaris is about every horse they own.” She chuckled at that.

“Were you ever interested in the horses or the ranch?” he asked.

“Sure. You don’t grow up on a ranch without learning a lot about the business. By the time I came along they’d gone more to raising horses than cattle. Although our mom still ran some cattle.”

“I just don’t see you as a cowgirl.”

“Once upon a time I was. I still ride. But Damaris is the real cowgirl of the family. Do you ride, Trevor?”

“Yeah, my Harley is right outside.”

“Ha-ha. I meant do you ride horses.”

“Never have.”

“You’ll have to come with me out to the ranch sometime. You’d like riding.”

He didn’t look too sure of that but he didn’t say no.

“I’ll see you later,” she said.

A short while after that she waited for Damaris at the Diner. The restaurant had been around since the 1940s, one of the long-time businesses that was on the Square. The last time the decor had been updated was sometime in the 1980s. Even so, the vinyl-covered booths, wood tables and chairs, wood floor, and paintings—most of them not very good—by long-forgotten local artists gave it a vintage air that suited it. And the food was excellent—good, down-home country cooking.

Fortunately her sister showed up before she’d given in and ordered. “I’m starving. Order first,” she said by way of a greeting.

“Are we hangry today?” Damaris took a seat and signaled the waitress.

Jedidiah ignored her in favor of ordering a chicken salad sandwich and chips, giving Trevor’s to-go order as well.

“Chicken salad sandwich sounds good to me too. Make it two,” she told Minnie, the waitress.

“All right, tell me about the new mare.”

“I will, but first, what’s happened to you? You look…” Her voice trailed off and then she said, “Oh, my God. You had sex with Trevor!”

Jedidiah glared at her. “I don’t think everyone in the restaurant heard. Can you say it a little louder?”

Damaris clapped her hands. “Gabe’s going to be insufferable since he’s the one who introduced you two. It’s true, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, it’s true.” Thinking about the day and night before, she couldn’t help smiling.

“I won’t ask if it was good. That cat-ate-the-canary smile says it all.”

More than good, it was amazing. “I like him, Damaris.”

“I would hope so since you slept with him.”

“No, I mean, besides the sex, I just like him. He’s…he’s a good guy.”
