Chapter Seven
He needed toget laid. Problem was, there was only one woman Trevor was interested in and she was off-limits. Unless she made the first move and he didn’t think she would.
Damn it, he wished he hadn’t hired Jedidiah as his assistant. Oh, she was an excellent assistant. Too good really, for what he was paying her. Unfortunately, hiring her had put her on his don’t touch list. What the hell had he been thinking?
That he needed an assistant, that’s what. He just hadn’t counted on said assistant being hot as hell and tempting as sin.
He’d gone to the second annual Whiskey River Artisans’ Fair early, before it got too miserably hot. It was still hot and humid, of course, just not quite as unbearable as it would be later in the day. Summer in Central Texas was burning up a lot of the time. Sometimes the humidity was so bad it was hard to breathe and you felt like you were swimming through the air.
His friend, Wilson Reynolds, had a booth for his woodworking and that was his first stop. Will carved wildlife mostly, though he’d been known to make other things as well. His wife, Melody, was a noted wildlife photographer who traveled all over the world, and Will often used her pictures as models for his work. Will and Mel were one of the reasons he’d bought a house in Whiskey River in the first place, and they’d been really happy when he’d decided to move down there for good.
“Hey, Will. What’s happening?” The two men exchanged a bro hug/slap on the back.
“Not a damn thing, but it’s early yet. Have a seat,” Will said, indicating an empty chair beside him.
“Where’s that gorgeous wife of yours and my godson?”
“She’s at home with Andy. He’s got a cold. So you’ll have to save your flirting for another time.”
“Too bad. Hope the little guy is okay.”
“Mostly cranky,” Will said. “Which made me glad I had somewhere to go.” He sat in one of the folding chairs and gestured at Trevor to take the other.
It was early yet and the fair had just gotten going, so there weren’t a lot of people stopping by Will’s booth. Trevor and Will shot the shit for a while and then Will asked him, “How’s the assistant working out? She sure is a looker.”
“Yeah.” Dammit.
“What’s wrong? Isn’t she working out?”
“Yeah, she’s a great assistant. Got everything organized, she’s good with anything to do with computers and coding, and whatever else I need. Smart as a whip. We’ve even started bouncing ideas off each other, which is one of the things I’ve missed most since I moved away from Dallas.”
“You don’t seem very happy about that.”
Trevor jammed his fingers through his hair. Something he only did when he was frustrated. Lately he’d been frustrated as hell.
“Uh-oh, now that’s a tell,” Will said. “Tell Papa Will what’s wrong.”
Trevor shot him a dirty look. “You’re an ass sometimes, you know?”
“It’s one of my best qualities,” he answered with a grin. “Well?”
“She’s too damn pretty.”
Will laughed. “You knew that when you hired her.”
“Yeah, but I figured she’d be like most of the beautiful women I’ve been around.” So he could easily say she wasn’t tempting. Beautiful on the outside but not on the inside. But as far as he could tell, Jedidiah was in a league of her own, and there wasn’t a single vain or self-centered bone in her body.
“Like your ex.”
She was the epitome of what he was talking about. “Right. Totally self-absorbed. Vain as the woman with the mirror in that fairy tale.”
“I think you mean the evil queen inSnow White.”
“Yeah, that’s the one.”
“But Jedidiah isn’t.”
He shook his head. “No. But she’s got this mysterious thing going on that’s about to drive me crazy.”
