She gazed at him, surprise in her eyes. “I have no idea why I told you that.”

“Because I have a trustworthy face?” he asked, trying to lighten the mood.

She smiled. “That must be it.”

“I guess it’s my turn.”

“You said you didn’t want to talk about it.”

“I didn’t. But after hearing your story, it seems only fair.”

“Only if you want to tell me.”

He shrugged. “I moved because of a woman. Because of a failed relationship.” And because he couldn’t take seeing Raquel all the time. Raquel who had moved on before they even broke up. With one of his friends. “She was—” He broke off, not wanting to say what he really thought, that she’d been a gold-digging bitch with no morals and the only thing to recommend her was her undeniable beauty. No, he was lucky to have escaped without marrying her. He wanted to think he’d have realized her true nature before that happened. Honestly, though, he wasn’t sure he would have if her infidelity hadn’t come to light.

Jedidiah didn’t say anything, she simply looked at him with compassion in those gorgeous green eyes. So he continued.

“She cheated on me with a friend of mine.”

She winced. “Ouch. Not a very good friend, was he?”

“No. But it wasn’tallhis fault. She decided he had more to offer so she went after him.”

“He could have said no.”

“Yeah, but he didn’t. Raquel was beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous. But the inside didn’t match the outside.”

“So now you don’t trust any beautiful woman.”

“I wouldn’t say that.” He looked at her, her long auburn hair pulled back in a single braid, green eyes that made him think he’d fallen into an emerald lake, perfect full lips that he could imagine kissing for hours. He’d seen her both dressed up and the way she looked now, in jeans and a sleeveless shirt, and truthfully, he couldn’t decide which way she was prettier. “I hired you, didn’t I?”

She gazed at him a minute. “What am I supposed to say to that?”

“Thank you?”

She laughed. “I’m not that conceited.”

“It’s not conceit when it’s a simple fact. Besides, you’re bound to know you’re drop-dead gorgeous.”

“I know that men have different reasons for exaggerating. But since you’re my employer and not someone trying to date me, I’m not sure what your reason is.”

“No reason, except it’s the truth.” His phone dinged and he looked at the notification. “The tornado warning is over. It’s back to a watch.” He glanced up at her with a smile. “We can get out of the closet now.” Too bad. He wouldn’t have minded being stuck for a little longer.
