Chapter Five
Trevor and Jedidiahfell into an easy work relationship quickly. Jedidiah was still organizing everything but she’d also begun to learn more about apps as well as brainstorming with Trevor. He didn’t bring up their discussion about BFK from several days before. But he wondered what had gotten to Jedidiah when they talked about the wedding reception. He’d never seen such a sad, despairing expression on anyone’s face. But that look had faded as quickly as it had come. He almost thought he’d imagined it. Almost.
“The weather is getting worse,” Jedidiah said late that afternoon. “I should leave while I still can.”
“No you shouldn’t. You missed your window. There’s a tornado warning for the area.” Trevor had a weather app on his phone that had just notified him.
“A warning or a watch? Whenever there’s a bad storm there’s a watch.”
“Warning. They spotted one in Fredericksburg and one in Johnson City. We’re smack dab in the middle of a bunch of possible tornadoes.”
“Well, shit. How long is this warning supposed to last?”
“Until nine p.m.”
She appeared to be weighing her options.
“It’s not worth it, Jedidiah. There’s no reason to risk your neck when you can just stay here.”
“Do you have any food?”
Trevor laughed. “I’m sure I can scrounge something up.”
“Do you cook?”
“Some. Don’t you?”
“I’m really good at ordering takeout. Or making frozen pizza or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.”
“Hate to break it to you but that’s not cooking.”
“It’ll do in a pinch.”
“Come on.” He got up and headed to the kitchen. “What do you say to breakfast for dinner?”
“As long as you’re cooking it sounds great.”
A short time later he had the bacon cooking in the microwave, the bread sitting in the toaster, and the eggs in the pan waiting to be scrambled. “Can you handle the toast?”
“Maybe.”
Surprised, he raised an eyebrow at her.
Jedidiah laughed. “Of course I can make toast. I’m not totally hopeless.” She turned on the toaster. “See?”
“Oh, crap,” he said as the fuse blew and the room was plunged into darkness.
“Oops,” Jedidiah said. “What happened?”
“You can’t run the toaster and the microwave at the same time. Sorry, I should have warned you.”
“Where’s the fuse box? I can at least flip the switch.”
“It’s in the garage. There’s a flashlight—” He turned to get the flashlight just as Jedidiah stepped into his path. They grabbed onto each other, his hands on her arms and hers at his waist. For a moment he simply stood there. She smelled great. Like some kind of flower he couldn’t name but the scent was both sweet and sultry. He’d smelled the scent before, but never quite this close. Gardenias maybe? Whatever, it made his mouth water. He thought he heard her draw in a breath. Once he realized he wanted to keep her close, he let go of her quickly. Not a good idea. She works for you.
“Flashlight?” she asked.
He’d imagined that quick intake of breath. He must have. He found the light and handed it to her. “The box is on the wall on the right closest to the back door.”
