“Therodeocowboy,” she clarified, “was a piece of…crap. So no, it didn’t work out.”
“Any other reason?”
She shrugged. “I needed a change. I’ve lived in West Texas most of my life and after being at the same place for years, I wanted a chance to manage a place on my own. I knew I was never going to be more than assistant manager at the Double K. The manager has been with them for years and he isn’t going anywhere. And a lot of the time Iwasthe manager, even though I wasn’t recognized or paid for it.”
“Those sound like good reasons. We can discuss salary later, but it will be commensurate with your experience. If we hire you, you’ll have room and board and a ranch truck for your use. The manager’s office is in the barn, which I’ll show you after we go to the pasture to see the horses. Any deal breakers?”
“I have a horse and a dog I’m not willing to part with. And of course,” she added sarcastically, “there’s the little fact that we slept together.”
He remembered. Man, did he remember. Better to ignore the jab. “A horse and dog are no problem. We’re a ranch, after all,” he added with a smile before standing straight. “Come on and I’ll show you the rest of the place and you can meet some of the horses.”
Chase held open the office door, showing her out ahead of himself. His gaze fixed on her ass, beautifully outlined in tight jeans.
Stop, you pervert.
I’m only looking, he argued.Looking is okay. Touching isn’t. I won’t touch. Again. Ever.
And that, he thought, was a damn shame.
