“Why would they? It’s not like you stole from them. All you did was blow off Chase.”

“Hazel! I did not blow him off.”

“You broke up with him. Same thing.”

Damn, Hazel never hesitated to call things as she saw them. And she was right, which annoyed Ella sometimes, this being one of them. “It’s not the same thing. I broke up with him so he wouldn’t make a decision he’d have regretted.”

“He’s a grown man. Don’t you think that’s for him to decide?”

“I thought you were on my side?”

“I am. You’re still madly in love with the guy. And from what you’ve told me, he’s still madly in love with you. Seems to me you should be figuring out a way to stay together rather than break up.”

“I miss him so much.”

“Let me ask you something. If you knew he was going to retire within the next two or three years would you stay with him?”

“In a heartbeat. But I’d have to be convinced that he’d do it and that it was what he wanted.” Would she regret it? Maybe. But she was sure as hell regretting breaking up.

“Well, there’s your answer. You’re miserable. Do something about it.”
