“Oh honey.” He put his hand on my shoulder, plopping down on the floor next to me.
I rested my hand on his. “Oh well. That’s what I get for trusting my stupid heart.”
“Someday someone will be worthy of your love.”
“I’m not going to hold my breath.”
He kissed my cheek. “Well, I hate to run when you’re mopey, but I’m going to be late for my shift if I don’t head out. I walked Dozer twice already today, he was antsy without you.”
“Thanks for staying here with him.”
“Any time. Love you.”
“Love you too.”
I grabbed my bags out of the doorway and hugged my sweet cousin goodbye.
My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out to see Finn’s name scrolling across the screen.
Nope.
I hit the fuck-you button.
I hope he can take a hint.
No message.
I brought my bags into my room, turned on the shower, and didn’t even have my bra off before he was calling again.
I hit the fuck-you button, again.
He called again.
I guess he can’t take a hint.
I got into the shower without ending the call. The pipes moaned, spewing out steaming hot water that engulfed the tiny space. I loved the way warm water felt rolling over my tired aching muscles. I loved what I did but being on my feet all day, climbing on chairs, and kneeling on mushy grass left me exhausted and sore the entire next day.
Turning off the shower and wrapping my plush robe around my dripping body, I made my way to the couch for a much needed TV-surfing-cuddle-session with my pup. Dozer hopped up next to me, nuzzling his head onto my leg while he shifted to get comfortable.
After a fewHappy Daysreruns, I started to nod off, until the sound of knocking came from the front door. I glanced at the clock on the wall: it was almost midnight.
“Who the hell?” I muttered as I went to the door, straining on my tiptoes to see through the peephole.
No luck.
“Who is it?” I reluctantly called through the door.
“It’s Finn.”
“Go home.”
“Please let me in. I don’t know what I did. Just talk to me.”
“Ask the woman who answered your phone the other night.”
“What? Joey, let me in.”
“Are you going to go away if I don’t?”
