The temperature hit ninety-two by noon on the third day. I could feel the sun pressing against the back of my neck like a flat iron, the UV index high enough that Compass retreated to the shade beneath the porch and refused to patrol until the shadows lengthened. The cattle bunched near the water troughs, heads low, tails flicking at flies. Even the horses stayed close to the barn, nosing at the shade along the eastern wall. Every living thing on the property was looking for relief from the heat.

Except the workers.

They moved through it without complaint. Fence repair in the south pasture, a four-hour stretch of post-driving and wire-stringing that had me soaking through two shirts and drinking a gallon of water before lunch. I worked beside them, close enough to watch, and what I saw made the pressure in my chest tighten another degree.

Miguel's white shirt was soaked through with sweat from collar to waistband, the fabric transparent against his back, outlining the muscles beneath. But he didn't push the sleeves up. His forearms stayed covered even when the sweat ran down his wrists and dripped from his fingertips onto the fence wire.

The women were the same. The one with the braid, whose name I'd learned was Sofía, worked the wire with hands that moved fast and sure, her shirt plastered to her shoulders, the heat coming off her body in visible waves. She never once adjusted the sleeves.

Tomás was the worst. The boy was suffering. I could see it in the flush that crawled up his neck and into his face, the way his breathing shortened in the early afternoon, the slight tremor in his hands that spoke to the beginning of heat exhaustion. He was nineteen, lean, and his body didn't have the reserves to burn through a full day of manual labor in ninety-degree heat wearing a shirt that trapped every degree against his skin.

I walked over to him with a water bottle. He was leaning against a fence post, his chest heaving, his eyes glassy.

"Drink." I pressed the bottle into his hand. "Bebe. Ahora."

Drink. Now.

He drank. Fast, desperate, the water running down his chin and soaking into the collar of his shirt. When he finished, I held out my hand for the empty bottle and looked at him.

"You can roll your sleeves up. It's too hot for this." I mimed the gesture, pushing my own sleeve above my elbow,while repeating in Spanish: "Puedes subir las mangas. Hace demasiado calor."

You can roll the sleeves up. It's too hot.

Something happened to his face. A sequence of expressions that moved through his features the way weather moved through a valley—fast and impossible to stop. First the understanding. Then the desire, the almost physical pull toward relief. Then the fear.

The fear won.

It settled over his features and he shook his head, a quick tight motion, his eyes dropping to the ground.

"No." Quiet. Absolute. "Está bien así."

It's fine like this.

It was not fine like this. The boy was overheating in a garment he refused to modify despite the fact that I was standing right there telling him he could. Which meant the instruction to keep the sleeves down hadn't come from comfort or habit. It had come from someone else. And the instruction carried enough weight to override the body's basic survival instinct to cool itself.

I didn't push. I gave him another water bottle and moved on. But I watched him carefully for the rest of the afternoon, from a distance. As if I was watching a horse that's favoring a leg—tracking the injury it's trying to hide.

That evening I sat in the kitchen with the High Basin folder spread across the table. Contact numbers. Work schedules. Emergency protocols. All of it printed on crisp letterhead with the company logo in the upper right corner—the same logo I'd seen on the laminated card in the duffel bag: an H inside asimple circle. No design effort. Just a letter and a shape, like someone had stamped it and moved on.

I picked up the phone and dialed the main number.

Three rings. A recorded message.Thank you for calling High Basin Agricultural Services. Your call is important to us.I was forced to listen to hold music that sounded like it had been composed by a robot who was given no detailed instructions. After two minutes, a click.

"High Basin, how can I direct your call?"

"This is Logan Kessler. I'm a client. Account number should be under Kessler Ranch, central Montana. I need to speak with someone about my workers' visa documentation."

"One moment, please."

Transfer. More hold music. Another click.

"Client services, this is Andrea."

"I need the H-2A visa documentation for my twelve workers. I was told it would be expedited. That was two days ago."

"Let me pull up your account, Mr. Kessler." Keyboard sounds. A pause that lasted slightly too long. "I see your account. The documentation is currently in processing. Our compliance team handles all visa paperwork centrally, and the current processing time is four to six weeks."

"Four to six weeks. Your field rep told me it would be expedited."
