“She could be inside one of the buildings watching for us.”
“True that.”
“We’ll do sound checks now.” Mack muted his mic and looked at Addy. “Go ahead.”
“Testing,” she said. “Testing.”
“Got you loud and clear,” Kiley replied.
“Then we’re a go.” Mack kept his focus on Addy. “Anything happens out of the ordinary, just the slightest little thing, we bail. No questions asked.”
“Got it,” she said, but didn’t sound like her heart was in it.
He understood. He desperately wanted to bring in Zamora too, but not at the expense of their lives.
A sharp, biting wind mixed with cold drizzle hit Addy when she stepped out of the vehicle. She lifted her hood but resisted bending her head from the rain as they moved through darkshadows to the back of the building. She had to stay alert and watch for danger.
She glanced around the end of the building into an open area with a small playground, a rusty swing squeaking in the wind. A faraway streetlight cast a weak glow over the area, leaving most of it shadowed. The darkness allowed Sean and Kiley to take cover, but it also allowed other people to do the same thing, raising Addy’s concern.
“Keep your eyes peeled,” Mack said as they swung around the end of the building. But he didn’t need to issue any warnings as Addy was scanning the area before he got the words out.
A person crept out from one of the apartments down the way. Addy instinctually went for her gun until the person’s identity became clear. Then she let out a breath and waited for Camila to join them. “You live here?”
She shook her head, her eyes locked on Mack. “My friend does. One that Razo and Zamora don’t know.”
Mack stepped forward, and Camila backed up. She’d developed real trust issues with older men.
Addy smiled at her to help ease her nerves. “Thanks for meeting me and letting Mack come with me.”
She gave Mack a wary look. “Only agreed because you’re married and you vouched for him.” She turned back to Addy. “Almost didn’t come ’cause you didn’t respond to my earlier text.”
“I would have if I wasn’t in that accident and lost my memory.”
“So you said on the phone.”
“Don’t you believe me?”
“Yeah, sure.” Camila narrowed her eyes. “So, what do you want?”
That was Camila. Direct and to the point. “I need to talk to Zamora, but he’s gone into hiding.”
“What’s he done?”
Addy debated telling her, but if Camila heard he’d threatened Addy’s mother and nurse and drugged Addy, she thoughtCamila would be more forthcoming. She decided to share the story in detail.
Camila’s eyes tightened in rage. “He’s gone too far this time. Your poor mom.”
“Can you tell me where he is, then?” Addy asked, hoping she wasn’t being too pushy and sent Camila running.
“Yeah, sure.” She rattled off an address in Hillsboro. “It’s his new girlfriend’s place. He’s holed up there and doesn’t leave for anything. Sends the girl to do all his dirty work. Too big of a baby. Afraid he’s gonna get collared.”
“Odd that the police didn’t check her place out,” Mack said.
“They probably don’t know about Mariana. When I say new, I meannew. As in a few days. At least it’s only been that long since he’s been bringing her around. She’s just a kid like I was. Parents are dead. She lives with her older sister now, who doesn’t care about what Mariana does.”
“Thanks for the information.” Addy smiled at Camila again.
Camila looked around and stepped closer. “There’s something else. The reason I asked to meet you before.”
