“Did Addy ever stake out Razo?” Sean asked.
“We did several times but to no avail. Even got a wiretap for his phone, but he’s too cagey. Either he was speaking in code or he has burner phones we don’t know about.” Harris frowned. “All of this should be in Leigh’s files. Have you reviewed them yet?”
“Spent most of the night doing so,” Mack said. “But we’ve been focusing on data revolving around the internet connection. I’d like to get some boots on the ground and put Razo under surveillance again.”
Harris scowled. “Could be a waste of time.”
“Why’s that?” Mack asked.
Harris took another breath, and Addy knew her supervisor didn’t have good news. “The prints on Leigh’s steering wheel came back to Razo’s lieutenant. A Dante Zamora.”
Addy gaped at the screen and had to clamp her mouth shut not to say anything.
“So it wasn’t Razo himself, but his errand boy who tried to take her out,” Mack said, his voice tight, his fingers clenched on his knees.
Harris gave a grim nod. “I don’t know a lot about Zamora, but I’m guessing Leigh was all over him, and you’ll find plenty of information in her files. I’m working on getting an arrest warrant right now. We’ll have to find him first, of course. If he’s not at the residence listed in DMV records, hopefully her files will hold a secondary address.”
Mack glanced at Addy, and she recovered enough from the news to give a shrug. She had no idea what the files contained on this guy or where he lived. His name didn’t ring a bell any more than anything else had in the last few days.
Mack faced the television again. “The guy’s not real careful if he left prints on the wheel.”
“Probably grabbed it when he leaned into the car to take her phone and didn’t even know he was doing it.” Harris pressed her lips together, a look Addy was very familiar with.
“Could mean he won’t be careful when we question him, and we’ll be able to get him to crack under interrogation.” Mack lifted his shoulders into a hard line. “I want to be there for the questioning.”
Harris gave a firm nod, and Addy was thankful she was including Mack, as Addy suspected he had great interviewing skills. He could be tough and yet caring. Two things combined together that might get a suspect to talk.
“I’ll call you once we have him in custody,” Harris said.
“What about forensics from the house?” Kiley asked. “Did you receive anything on that?”
“Sort of,” Harris said. “Techs found a bloodstain on the sheet the attackers used for a backdrop and on the knitting needle Leigh’s mother used to stab him. They’re running the samples for DNA, and we should have results anytime now.”
Addy was tempted to clap at the news. She wanted the person who’d threatened her sweet mother and Nancy found so he could pay for terrorizing two defenseless women.
“FYI, we don’t think Razo was at the house,” Harris continued. “One of the techs at the Oregon State Lab has been following a new development in bloodstain analysis. This test can determine the age of the person from the recovered blood sample.”
“Never knew they could do that,” Sean said, echoing Addy’s thoughts.
“It’s experimental and isn’t a readily accepted science in a court of law yet, so no one is officially using it. Still, the tech ran it through Raman spectroscopy and has narrowed down the age range. It doesn’t fit Razo’s age.”
Mack leaned forward, his attention fixed tightly on Harris. “Does it fit Zamora’s?”
“Yes.”
“Not surprising that Razo doesn’t want to get his hands dirty.” Kiley crossed her arms. “Send in his lieutenant, so if anyone gets busted, he can run his business as usual.”
“Exactly.” Harris’s mouth turned down. “You should also know that a guy fitting Zamora’s description was seen in the hallway outside Leigh’s hospital room a few hours ago. When he caught sight of the agent on duty, he did an about-face and took off down a stairwell.”
“Actually, that’s kind of good news, right?” Sean asked. “Means Razo and Zamora don’t know she’s been discharged.”
“Hadn’t thought of it that way.” Harris laid her hands onher desktop. “That’s all I have. Please tell me the Wonder Team has something to report?”
“I’ve got a couple of things,” Cam said. “First, CCTV footage from Addy’s drive to Rob’s office couldn’t be improved enough to get a look at the driver who tailed her. But it sounds like you might know who it is anyway. Good news is that we were able to improve the video from Addy’s house. The guy on the video not only has the cut on his hand from the knitting needle, but he has a unique birthmark just above it on his wrist. I’ll send out enhanced footage to everyone.”
Mack shot Addy a look. “Do we have any pictures of Razo’s or Zamora’s wrists?”
Addy and Harris both shrugged, but Addy would look through her files for pictures and information on Zamora the minute this call ended.
