“Sure thing. Just want you to have legit expectations.”

Mack did, but he didn’t like it. “The office tech is looking for her files in their backups, and I gotta hope he finds them so we won’t have to start her investigation over at the beginning.”

“She must have some paper notes, right? I mean even I do, and I’m a die-hard electronic-only kind of guy. And what about files on her laptop?”

“I haven’t asked, but I assume yes on the paper. The tech is also trying to see what she was doing on her computer right before the accident. I hope it’ll tell us where she was headed.”

Mack heard talking in the background of the phone.

“Hey,” Cam said, “my ride’s ready. I gotta go.”

“Let me know if you find anything and shoot me a text when you arrive at the office.”

“Will do.”

Mack ended the call and focused on the road until he reached Addy’s house. He grabbed his phone and placed a video callto Kiley and asked her to get Sean too. She moved the phone, and he glanced at the screen showing Sean behind the wheel of an SUV.

“Hey, man, we’re on the way to the airport,” Sean said before Mack could say a word.

“So I guess you’ve talked to Eisenhower and he brought you up to speed on the situation here,” Mack said.

Kiley moved the camera back to her side of the car. “He did. Loaded the SUV the minute he told us we were being reassigned to you. Just parking at the airport now.”

Mack took a long breath before continuing. “I know you won’t want to leave the Montgomery investigation behind, and I’m sorry about that.”

Kiley shook her head, her pencil bun holder falling out and her ponytail swinging free. “Of course we’re coming to Portland. You and Addy need us.”

He heard brakes being applied, and Sean leaned into the video. “I won’t pretend that I don’t want to keep at Williams, but if anyone can get anything more from the guy, it’ll be Eisenhower. And besides, Addy needs us more.”

“Now what do you want us to get started on?” Kiley asked.

He brought them up to date on Razo and the hack. “Kiley, I need you to come to the hospital and image the drive on Addy’s computer. Then start trying to figure out what she might have been doing before she took off from the office. The local tech is working that, but it’s always good to have a second set of eyes on it.”

She nodded. “Will do.”

“I’m heading back to see Addy tonight and get her buy-in on setting up a safe house and protection detail for her,” Mack said. “Sean, can you arrange the safe house? I thought maybe we could stay at one of the places we used when we had to protect the twins.”

Sean eyed him. Mack knew it wasn’t because he didn’t knowwho Mack was talking about. The team provided protection for witnesses Dianne and Dustee Carr when their lives were threatened by a hacker, and Sean led that investigation. Which was when he’d met his fiancée, Taylor Mills, so he could hardly forget it.

“You think Addy’s going to agree to ride this out in seclusion?” Sean asked.

The question of the hour in Mack’s mind. “Her supervisor has already agreed. I hope Addy will too.”

Sean arched an eyebrow. “She really doesn’t remember you? Or us?”

“Not at all.”

“That’s a bummer, but it might work in your favor with no bad blood between you to muck things up right now.”

“Yeah,” Mack said and decided to move on. He’d never told the team why he’d split up with Addy, and she hadn’t said a word either. The team knew about his PTSD, however. Not the full extent of the problem, but they’d seen him in flashback mode a few times. He’d told them he was going to counseling, and they accepted it as a part of who he was and kept his issue confidential. He did know that if he’d had any problems on the job that put anyone in danger, they would be forced to report it, but so far that hadn’t happened, and now that he was seeing a counselor, that was very unlikely. “So you good with finding a location, Sean?”

Sean nodded. “I’ll coordinate with the local FBI office, and if the place we stayed at before isn’t available, I’ll find another location by the end of the day.”

“Thanks,” Mack said. “I’m hoping Addy will agree to let us stay with her. If not, I’ll need you to find a house nearby.”

“Where are you staying now?” Kiley asked.

“Hospital lounge, but if I can’t get a shower here today, I’ll check into a hotel to get cleaned up.”
