The door creaked open. “Mack. I need to see you right now.”
“In here!” Praying Cam had a lead, Mack raced to the door.
The senator jumped to his feet. “What’s the meaning of this break-in?”
“Sorry, Senator,” Sean said. “That would be our teammate. He must have important information.”
“But I didn’t give him access to my home.”
“He’ll just be a minute.” Sean kept placating the senator, but Mack didn’t care if he was upset. Addy was missing and miniguns were ready to be shipped. Cam entering the house was a minor thing.
He was carrying his laptop, and his eyes were narrowed as he rushed through the big foyer and past décor that screamed of wealth.
“What do you have?” Mack asked.
“Not here.” Cam grabbed Mack’s arm and dragged him away from the door. “The letter you found at Zamora’s place and the wanted flyer. They were printed on the same printer as the list of malls you found in Addy’s car.”
“The senator?” Mack gaped at Cam. “He printed the wanted flyer and the warning to stop? Are you sure?”
“Positive.” Cam looked Mack directly in the eyes. “He has to be the secret boss Zamora refuses to turn on. The man who’s in charge of smuggling the guns and who has Addy.”
Addy held her breath and glanced between the two men, checking for any indication that they’d seen her wake up her phone.
LeRoy had his eyes closed. Holt was focusing on turning a corner.
Now was the time. She slid the phone up higher and opened the what3words app. The triangulation had completed. She memorized the words—outpost, insertion, chocolates—in case she was unable to do so when they reached their final destination.
She lowered her call volume down to mute and tapped Mack’s icon.
Yes! She was succeeding. But her hands were trembling. She took another breath. Eased it out.
Holt slowed and turned to start climbing into the mountains. The truck bumped over deep ruts, the air rushing in from Holt’s cracked window growing cooler.
“Where are we?” she asked loudly to make sure Mack could hear her.
“None of your beeswax.” LeRoy leaned forward in anticipation.
Perfect.Neither of them was looking at her. She bowed her head.
“Mack, what3words,” she said loudly and hoped the men didn’t know about the app. Then she uttered the three words provided by the app even louder.
LeRoy looked at her. “Are you nuts or something?”
“Yeah,” she said and shoved her phone deep into her pocket.
“Well, shut your yap. We’re just about there. You’re gonna soon find out your fate.” He grinned at her, an evil smile that sent terror to her heart.
Chapter 26
MACK MARCHED ACROSS THE OFFICEto confront the senator. “It’s you. You’re the one behind it all. The gunrunning. The attempted murder. The kidnapping. Maybe even the upcoming massacre of federal employees with the miniguns.”
Noble clasped a hand to his chest. “I beg your pardon.”
“We have proof. This.” Mack slammed their copy of the wantedDead or Aliveposter on the desk. “And this.” He added the warning to Zamora. “Were printed on the same printer as the list you just gave Agent Leigh.”
The senator paled. “You can’t possibly prove something like that.”
“We can actually.” Cam stepped up to them. “Many printers add secret dots to pages as they print, and the dots form a pattern to tell us the make and serial number of the printer. All I have to do is match the number on these documents to your printer sitting there, and we have the proof we need.”
