She opened her mouth to tell him everything, to blurt it out and get it over with, but even as the words were forming on the tip of her tongue, they died there. Yes, she’d spent two days having sex with this man, but they didn’t know each other.

What if she told him everything and he decided it would be better to kill her? Or worse, what if he decided they could use her too and she exchanged one prison for another?

Except, if Saxon imprisoned her, she wouldn’t survive it. She’d somehow managed to get through her time here, but if he turned on her, it would devastate her. She’d tried to keep her heart protected from this man, but somehow he’d wiggled his way in, and she couldn’t deny she cared for him.

“I think it’s time to go,” she said before she found herself blurting out everything.

Saxon wanted to try to get her to open up more, but she was right, they couldn’t stay here any longer. “You should put layers of clothes on before we leave. It’s cold out there.”

Chapter Twenty

Elyse huddled deeperinto the blanket wrapped protectively around her as she kept her legs around Saxon’s waist and her head on his shoulder. The wind howled like a banshee as it tore through the mountains and rattled the trees. Snow blew across the street and swirled around them, making it look like the blizzard had returned, but the sun shone down on them, and there were no clouds in the sky.

Even with the friction of Saxon’s body moving against hers, the layers of clothes, and the blanket, she was still freezing. It was at least twenty below with the windchill, and the more she tried not to let her teeth chatter, the more they did.

“Are you okay?” Saxon asked.

“Gr… gr… eat,” she said through chattering teeth.

He knew it was a lie as she shook against him and her lips against his neck were ice cold. She wouldn’t complain though.

He jogged down the street as fast as he could while avoiding the cars driving past them. Some of the driver’s gawked at them, others ignored them, and a few beeped and waved as they drove past. Saxon gritted his teeth against the impulse to beat those humans. Sometimes, he wondered why they bothered to protect the human race from the Savages.

Sure, they were the food supply and could be a lot of fun, but sometimes they were ignorant assholes he’d prefer to stomp.

When he came over the top of a hill, the wind slapped him in the face and stole his breath. Elyse curled up closer to him as the wind tore at the blanket. She was his mate; she shouldn’t be suffering like this, and the more time they spent out here, the more likely they were to have a Savage come across them.

Many of them couldn’t tolerate the sun’s rays, but some of the ones who hadn’t killed as much could be out in the day for short periods. Those were the ones they would send after Elyse.

He traveled nearly seven miles before he heard the hum of the tires from the next approaching car. He ignored the snow falling into his boots as he climbed onto the bank on the side of the road and turned to watch the black car cresting the hill. The sun reflecting off the windshield made it impossible to see who sat behind the wheel, but the vehicle slowed as it approached.

If this person beeped and waved at them, he was going to memorize their license plate, learn where they lived, and beat the shit out of them. Instead, the car swerved to the side of the road and tires screeched as it came to a stop.

Saxon tensed as he prepared to destroy anyone who came out of the car. Instead, the passenger window came down to reveal Lucien leaning across the seat to scowl at him. “Wherehave you been?”

Saxon’s shoulders sagged, and he trudged out of the snow to open the back door. Lucien turned to face him as he settled in the back with Elyse still around him.

“What happened to you, and who is that?” Lucien demanded as Saxon closed the door.

Elyse tugged the blanket away from her head and turned to face the source of the disgruntled voice. Her eyes widened when she spotted the man glaring at them from the front seat. His sandy blond hair was a disheveled mess and his eyes, the color of a raven’s wings, narrowed on her.

“Are you kidding me!” Lucien shouted. “You disappeared for two days for a piece ofass?”

Very little ever incensed Saxon, but his temper exploded before he could stop it. “Fuck you! Don’teversay anything like that to her again!”

Lucien’s eyebrows shot up, and his eyes returned to Elyse who’d gone still against him. He ran his hands over her back, looking to soothe her when he detected the increased beat of her heart.

Lucien sat back a little, and some of his ire eased. “What happened?”

“A whole lot,” Saxon said as his temper calmed. “We should get out of here.”

He’d always been slow to anger and quick to get over it; he was glad to discover he still got over it fast, but how long would that last? He was already starting to unravel a little, and the longer they remained unmated, the more control he would lose.

“Elyse, this is my friend, Lucien,” Saxon said as Lucien pulled away from the side of the road.

“Hi,” she murmured.

Lucien glanced at her in the rearview mirror and grunted a response. Elyse tried to remain calm as she gazed between the two vamps, but her heart was going too fast, and they would be able to hear it. She was trapped in this car, and soon they would take her somewhere else.
