“Maybe, butI’mnot about to get laid and have her walk in on me.”

He pulls back, his arms straightened on either side of my head so most of his weight is gone.

“Thought you wanted kids?”

“I do?” It comes out unsure. I have no idea where he’s going with this.

“One or three. Right?”

“Yes?” Another question. Not sure if my answers are helping or hurting in this conversation.

His grin turns saucy as he leans down, hovering just out of reach, and waits. I can’t help but look at his lips, then back to his eyes. Again and again, my attention is drawn to his plump lips. I want them on me. So badly.

“Then we best get started. I’m not getting any younger, woman.”

Then he seals his mouth over mine, and all thoughts of anything else but him leave my mind. I sink into the feeling of him as our future swarms around me and swaddles me up in endless happiness.

Chapter 30 - Karter

“So, which ones are single?” Nana asks, looking around at all the brothers. “Oh! Well, hello there.”

I look behind me at what caught her eye and almost spit out my beer.

“He’s taken.” I should have known this was a bad idea to bring her here.

“What’s his name?” She isn’t deterred in the slightest.

“Mike Stalone. Gator’s dad. Married to the VP’s mom, Margret.”

Nana doesn’t take her eyes off the older gentleman, and I know he’s noticed her. Or at least the stare-down she’s giving him from the way his ears are turning pink.

“Foolish woman to leave a fine specimen like him all alone.”

“Ah, Nana?” Babygirl pulls both of our attention as she nods in another direction, where Margret is glaring daggers at Nana.

They stare at each other without blinking. No one is breaking anything, which is good, but if this gets heated, I don’t know who’ll win.

“I can take her.”

Now it’s Mad Max who spits out his beer, just a little.

It’s been almost two weeks since I claimed my old lady at the hospital. This is the first time we thought bringing Nana here was a good idea. It’s another club family barbecue, which we figured would be a good way to ease her in.

Boy, were we wrong. Mad Max and Fairy are sitting with us, and we’ve gotten a few of the other old ladies around us. Even Peaches, who’s more wrapped up in her man’s arms than the conversation. Can’t say I blame them. I want to be anywhere but in this conversation myself.

“I’d pay to see that,” Troublemaker says. Her mother-in-law is a hard woman to love. Or get toknow at all, to be fair.

We were all surprised when she set her eyes on Gator’s dad, who was only up for a visit. But not one of us blinked twice when she declared them married after stealing the judge at her son’s wedding and demanding he marry them then and there.

“Easy, Nana.” Babygirl shakes her head with a smile. “Let’s leave the bar fighting to the boys. Plenty of other fish in the sea.”

The old woman hums. I think she’s debating whether Mike is worth it. Catfights? Hot. Old-lady catfights? Not something that is ever going to be on my wish list.

“Fine. Icouldtake her, but I’m not a home-wrecker. Besides, I think I want a younger model.”

I fold my lips in my mouth to keep the laughter from rolling out. The rest of the group around us ain’t any better.

“The prospects are the youngest ones here, and none of them attached as far as I know,” Fairy says without a clue what or who she’s offering to Nana.
