The other vehicles had all sped out of the long driveway and underneath the Texas Brand arch, but Wolf pulled the truck over right underneath it. Then he reached past her to open the glove compartment.

“The nurses gave me Mom’s things when she passed. I put them in here and kind of forget about them till I was going through ’em early this morning.” He pulled out a small box and Camellia sucked in a breath.

He opened it, revealing a perfect diamond ring. “It was Grandma Sage’s. Ma wore it every day since she passed. Now I’d like you to wear it.”

“Wolf,” she whispered.

“I know what’s between us is new, Camellia, but I also know…it’syou. It’syou, you know?”

“I know it’s you, too,” she said.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah,” she said, nodding, and he leaned in and kissed her while sliding the ring onto her finger.

When he raised his head again, Camellia laughed softly.

“What’s so funny?” he asked.

She threaded her fingers through his hair. “When I was little, I used to worry all the time that I’d never get to have a big wedding, because I had such a small family.”

Then she laughed some more, and Wolf started laughing, too, as he put his truck into gear and aimed them toward El Paso.

They pulled away, leaving a cloud of love-infused dust beneath the arch above the Texas Brand.
