Riggs watched Darius, as if trying to decide whether he could trust him. “I’ve been mostly alone, but the guards aren’t very friendly.”
“It’s not their job to be friendly, but they do need to keep you safe.” Darius set a print of the image of Watts and the other man before Riggs. “Who is the man at the wheel?”
Riggs looked at the image but showed no sign of recognition. “No idea.”
“Are you sure?”
“If I knew who he was, I would fucking tell you, all right? Then he could back me up and tell you that I had nothing to do with it.”
Darius left the print on the table, then set the chat with Tiger889 and ClimbrBro in front of Riggs. “Do you know who these two are?”
Riggs read through the chat, shook his head. “I didn’t know about this. I had no idea. I didn’t know anything.”
“That’s not what he asked you.” Marcs repeated Darius’ question. “Do you know who those two people are?”
Clearly distressed, Riggs pointed. “I know one of them. ClimbrBro—that’s Watts. But I don’t know the other one.”
“Are you certain you’ve never heard that name before or encountered that person online yourself?”
“Not that I remember.” Riggs looked pleadingly at Darius. “Look, man—”
Marcs interrupted. “Detective. Call him detective or sir.”
Riggs’ face turned red, his gaze shifting to Marcs and back. “Detective, I didn’t know about this. If I had known, I would have tried to stop him. As much as I think Sasha was a bitch to wreck my career over some stupid photos, I wouldn’t try tokillher.”
“You know what, Riggs?” Darius leaned in, lowered his voice. “I believe you.”
Riggs looked like he might cry again. “You… you do?”
Darius nodded. “I believe that you didn’t orchestrate this attack or participate in it. But I need you to help me find the bastard who talked Watts into attacking Ms. Dillon. It’shisfault that your buddy is dead. If you help me, I’ll talk to the DA on your behalf.”
Riggs nodded. “Okay. What do you need me to do?”
When she got homefrom her appointment, Sasha fell asleep in her chair, only waking when her mobile buzzed.
Megs.
“Hey!”
“How are you feeling?”
“Sleepy. I just woke from a nap.”
“There’s a Team meeting this afternoon at one. If you’d like to join us, I’ll swing by and pick you up. We can stop at Juana’s on the way and eat at The Cave.”
Sasha glanced at the time on her phone and was surprised to see it was already twenty past noon. “That sounds great. I’ll be ready.”
She ended the call, got slowly to her feet, and went in search of her Team notebook. By the time her coat and boots were on and her front door locked, Megs was waiting at the curb, talking with Tommy.
“Hey, Megs. Hey, Tommy.” Sasha climbed carefully into the front seat.
“I thought you might like to get a taste of your normal routine. I know everyone will be glad to see you. Besides, who can resist Juana’s?”
“Not I.” Sasha was just being honest.
“I love Juana’s.”
“You can follow along, and I’ll buy you lunch, too, Tommy.”
