Chapter Four
We stepped out into a long corridor lined with thick doors, all painted black, and all shut.
An odd feeling washed over me. Something in my gut told me this wasn’t a good place to be. The dark damask walls and matching floor had a Gothic feel to them. Little lights were on outside some of the rooms. Some were a normal color, and others were red.
“Where are we?” I took a step closer to Mason, nearly colliding with his back.
“My father’s.” He kept a tight grasp on my hand and led me down the hall.
Why does his dad have a room like that in his house? There was something off about this place; I could feel it in my gut.
Speak up for yourself.
“Where is Annie?”
“I already told you,” he sighed, exasperated.
"Well, that’s not good enough.” I shocked myself by speaking back to him again. It wasn’t in my nature to be confrontational. In fact, I hated to argue. My strength had always been in my ability to remain silent and work things out in my head, but that was no longer an option, thanks to him. He had me all twisted up inside.
I’d been asking myself questions that all had zero answers. Like, how did I get here? Who was the driver of the blue car? And why did Mason target me?
I had a delayed reaction when he abruptly turned around and grabbed hold of my face. He forced my head back, making me look him in the eyes.
“I thought I liked you when you were timid. Whatever this is? This shit that you’re doing? Keep doing it. You’re making my dick hard and giving me a reason to fuck you until I break you.” He squeezed my jaw, leaning down until his lips were mere centimeters from mine. I dropped his suit jacket and brought my hands up to grip his, careful not to move an inch.
“You said she was perfect. Let me see for myself,” I demanded for the second time, my voice coming out muffled. Honestly, I was terrified. My heart was racing in my chest like a thoroughbred in the Kentucky Derby, and my hands were moist with sweat.
I didn’t really want to poke his beast. He could tear me to shreds right where we stood if he wanted. His weight and height added to his sheer natural body strength would render me helpless, but how else would I get answers if I didn’t ask for them?
His dark brows shot up and he laughed at me again, pressing a quick kiss to my lips before stepping back.
“So that’s what this is really about?” he mused, bending down to grab his discarded jacket. “Katie-Kat—you’re jealous.”
His knowing smirk only further angered me. I wasn’t jealous. Why would I be jealous of Annie?
Because she’s normal and you’re not. Because he’ll pickher.
Shut up, I mentally snapped. If he wanted her, why would he take me? Unless she was in on it too…
“You really think I would do that to you?” he questioned, suddenly sounding angry.
His mood swings threatened to give me whiplash. He was smiling, glaring, or as blank-faced as a statue.
“I don’t know, Mason. Whywouldn’tyou do that to me? I don’t know who you are or why any of this is happening to me!”
I threw my hands up in the air and attempted to brush passed him.
A soft “oomph” was squeezed from my lungs when he wrapped his arms around me and crushed me to his chest.
“I told you it’s only you. You didn’t see what you think you did.”
“What does that even mean?” I squirmed in his embrace, but he held me tight, resting his head on mine.
I let him hold me, keeping my ear to his chest. Our heartbeats were in sync and I found it disturbing. It was dauntingly clear I wouldn’t get answers from him unless he wanted to give them to me, or I was smart enough to get them on my own.
I knew I could get away, though. He couldn’t keep me locked away like a prisoner forever.
