“You said we had time,” Max murmured, warm breath ghosting over my chest. “Is your pact with Frost broken?”

“No.” I held him tight when he went to move. “Stay still and I’ll explain.” I kissed the top of his head as he settled back down. I told him everything we’d discussed downstairs and what DCI Thornton had told me.

“So if we can prove the pact was formed under false pretences, then it can be invalidated?”

“Yeah.” I stroked a hand up and down his spine. “Though with my dad with Xen now, I don’t know how we’re going to do that.”

“Myla sent me the timestamps for Xen’s phone call to her dad,” he said. “If only we could get our hands on the security footage from that night. Maybe it’d shed some light on what really happened.”

“And for that we need to give Thornton some solid proof to request it. “

“Fuck.” Max sighed, and I held him that little bit tighter.

“There’s nothing we can do tonight, and you need to rest.” I kissed the top of his head again. “Sleep.”

I expected some form of protest, but Max let out another heavy sigh and relaxed against me. “Okay.”

“Night,” I murmured, but he was already asleep.
