I raised an eyebrow. “The bar where…?”

“Yep, Stella’s. I did a little digging yesterday. Found out who was working that night.”

“No one else was around when we got there, though. Just Xen and my dad.”

Max hummed. “Which is strange don’t you think? It didn’t occur to me at first, but someone should’ve been there. Serving drinks and waiting to lock up if nothing else, but who would leave two shifters alone to gamble? Especially when one of them was obviously drunk.”

“Xen said someone from the bar called him to come get my dad.” I met Max’s gaze. “Who, though?”

“That’s what we need to find out.”

“We’re under alpha orders not to discuss that night.” It was one reason why it had taken so long for us to look into it. We had no idea how to approach it. “How do we ask someone about a night we can’t talk about?”

“I don’t know. But we have to do something.”

Before it’s too late.

He didn’t need to say the words; it was written all over his face.

“I guess it won’t hurt to go have a drink after work with my best friend.”

Max’s lips curved into a sly smile. “Exactly.”

Maybe we’d get lucky and hear something that would help us fit more pieces of this puzzle in place. At worst I got to hang out with Max, and I needed to get my fill of nights like this while I still could.

We got out of the car and made our way towards the entrance to the station.

Once inside, Max led the way to our floor, grabbing my arm before I left him to go to my own office. “I’ll come get you when I’m ready to leave, okay? Shouldn’t be any later than six.”

I nodded. “See you later.”

Max headed down the hallway, and I opened my door and went inside.

The desk opposite mine sat empty. Thornton had yet to assign me a new permanent partner ever since my old one moved to Leicester to join his wife’s pack.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure how I felt about getting a new one. The thought of sharing my space with someone I didn’t know set my wolf on edge. I’d been helping Max out with his investigation in the hope Thornton wouldn’t give me one anytime soon, but it was only delaying things. The paranormal police worked in teams. No exceptions.

Fingers crossed it wouldn’t be any time soon, though. Having to acclimatise to a new partner on top of everything else?

Not something I was looking forward to.
